Golden Eagles use 5-run second to scuttle Pirates, 14-4

A 5-run sec­ond inning pro­pelled Big Wal­nut to a season-opening 14–4 non-conference soft­ball vic­tory over vis­it­ing Card­ing­ton Mon­day after­noon at Big Wal­nut High School.

Sopho­more Kate­lynn Chea­dle, who col­lected two dou­bles, scored two runs and drove in a pair of runs in her first var­sity game, stroked a big two-run dou­ble in the second-inning rally. Junior Ash­ley Kayser and sopho­mores Shaye Kuhlman and Leah Shaw com­bined for three sin­gles and three runs in the frame.

Senior Mor­gan Stephens, who scored twice and plated a pair of runs, joined Chea­dle with a pair of hits to lead the Golden Eagles’ 10-hit attack. Shaw fin­ished with three runs and three RBI.

Senior Emily Petty started in the mound and worked the first five innings against the vis­it­ing Pirates to pick up the win. She allowed four unearned runs on four hits. Junior Allie Walker came on in relief in the sixth and threw two score­less innings.
