The town will be painted purple, teams have formed and pledges are being made. Now, everything comes down to Friday, June 8, at 6 p.m., when the Big Walnut Relay For Life begins its annual overnight effort at Big Walnut High School Stadium to raise funds to fight cancer.
Traditionally, Relay For Life events begin with a 6 p.m. cancer survivor’s walk and a survivor’s reception to celebrate life. Caregivers and dignitaries join in during subsequent laps around the track, before Relay teams take to the field to walk through the night.
Money raised from the Big Walnut Relay for Life will go to the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society is the leading a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
One of the primary Big Walnut Relay For Life organizers, Belinda Jackson, said cancer has touched every family, making the annual Relay For Life a personal and a community event.
“Cancer does not sleep,” Jackson said. “And Relay For Life is more than a fund raiser. Through Relay events we honor survivors, we remember those who did not survive, and we educate our community.
“There”s much to be proud of in our Big Walnut community,” Jackson continued. “We have a wonderful community that shows love and compassion for our event; and we ask you to come out and show your support during that first survivors lap. You too will be rewarded.”

Be there …
