Memorial Volleyball Tournament just around the corner

Memo­r­ial Day has come and gone, grad­u­a­tion was last Sat­ur­day, Relay For Life is this com­ing week­end. That means no mat­ter what the weath­er­man says, sum­mer is here and the Fourth of July is just around the corner.

And for vol­ley­ball afi­ciona­dos, what bet­ter way to spend Inde­pen­dence Day than par­tic­i­pat­ing in the 13th Annual Memo­r­ial Vol­ley­ball Tour­na­ment, held in mem­ory of Corey Lehman and Steve Mor­gen­stern and in honor of Erin Smith, that will be held Wednes­day, July 4, at Big Wal­nut High School.

The pop­u­lar fundrais­ing tour­na­ment will be played out­doors on grass courts; and play­ers can enter one of three tour­na­ment divi­sions: Co-ed 6’s Power, Co-ed BB or Co-ed 6’s Recreational

• Co-ed 6’s Power is for play­ers with medium to high expe­ri­ence. Teams are to con­sist of a min­i­mum of two female play­ers and a max­i­mum of four males.

• Co-ed BB is for play­ers with medium expe­ri­ence. Teams are to con­sist of a min­i­mum of two females and a max­i­mum of four males.

• Co-ed 6’s Recre­ational is for those inter­ested in play­ing at a lower level of com­pe­ti­tion. Teams are to con­sist of a min­i­mum of two females and a max­i­mum of four males.

Prizes will be awarded to first place teams in all three divisions.

The cost to play is $25 per player, which includes a tour­na­ment T-shirt and a smoked pork loin lunch. Addi­tional T-shirts may be pur­chased at the tournament.

The tour­na­ment loca­tion is out­doors on the grass between Big Wal­nut High School and the for­mer Big Wal­nut Mid­dle School.

All three divi­sions will start play at 9 a.m. with reg­is­tra­tion at 8:15 a.m. Orga­niz­ers ask that every­one reg­is­ter and have team mem­bers there by 8:30 a.m. Teams may reg­is­ter early by email­ing Janet Lehman at < mlehman884@aol.com >.

In case of inclement weather, the tour­na­ment may be can­celed and entry fees will be refunded.

Make sure to bring canopies, lawn chairs, sun­screen, food and drink, but please “No Alcohol”.

Any­one inter­ested in becom­ing an indi­vid­ual or cor­po­rate Memo­r­ial Vol­ley­ball Tour­na­ment spon­sor may con­tact Janet Lehman. All tour­na­ment pro­ceeds go to the Corey Lehman Memo­r­ial Schol­ar­ship Fund.

Past Big Wal­nut High School recip­i­ents are: 2002 Mor­gan McKin­ley; 2003 Sara Smith; 2004 Kyle Stelzer; 2005 Amanda Wal­lace; 2006 Jus­tine Bauder; 2007 Sum­mer Hale; 2008 Corinne Win­dle and Cory Wolfe; 2009 Ali Betrone-Harpst and Nick Hei­den; 2010 Lau­ren Ustaszewski and Ben Bauer; and 2011 Micah Arm­brust, Eleni Lour­gos and Jazmine Reed.

Three schol­ar­ship awards, each for $1,000, were given out this year. Grant Beam, Tyler Beam and Emma Swys­good are the 2012 recip­i­ents of the Corey Lehman Memo­r­ial Scholarship.

Event orga­niz­ers thank every­one that par­tic­i­pates in the vol­ley­ball tour­na­ment to make this award pos­si­ble for Big Wal­nut senior athletes.
