Robert L. Baer

Robert L. Baer, 76, Sunbury, died Saturday evening, June 9, 2012, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born on December 4, 1935, in Lancaster to the late William and Rosalie (Callahan) Baer. A proud U.S. Marine Corp veteran, he was a member of the Sunbury V.F.W. Post 8736. Bud worked as a truck driver and route supervisor for Columbus Distributing before retiring.

Always the Marine he was an ornery cuss. Though he was rough on the outside, he had a heart of gold. He was happiest sharing a story with his many buddies. Witty, he enjoyed a good sense of humor and was also a member of the Sunbury Eagles.

Over the years his numerous interests included golf, softball, bowling, fishing and hunting rabbits when he was young. A gambler, he enjoyed video poker, the sunshine and ocean. His stool was always reserved at the Village Tavern, his favorite spot. He treasured his family and friends and was most proud of his awesome children.

Bud is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrna (Smith) whom he lovingly called “Smitty”; children Keith (Jona) of Sunbury, Stephanie (Jerold) Tear of Hicksville, Lesli (Keith) Kintner of Sunbury, Heidi Baer of Delaware and Derek (Linsey) of Centerburg; 17 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Mary Hardacre; and a host friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Baer, and a sister, Ada Mae Baer.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday (June 15, 2012) in Sunbury Memorial Park, led by Jerold Tear. Military honors will follow provided by the honor guard of V.F.W. Post 8736. A celebration of Bud’s life will be held at 12:30 p.m. at 865 Carters Corner Road.

Arrangements have been entrusted to DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to HomeReach Hospice or American Cancer Society.
