Big Walnut High School cheerleaders do not gather moss over the summer months. They stay active and continue to work out through the summer months to be ready for the fall football season’s demanding schedule.
This summer, Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity cheerleaders attended the UCA Cheer Camp from July 15 to 18 at the University of Kentucky where they received a host of awards.
There were over 1,000 participants from more than 45 schools at the camp, representing Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Colorado, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
“Our Varsity squad won the Home Dance Competition,” said Big Walnut High School Cheerleading Coach Sarah Kern-Kildow. “It was an honor to win this. There was so much competition, but our girls were so clean and sharp. They really were a step above.”
In addition, all eight seniors tried out and were selected as UCA All-Americans, giving them an opportunity to cheer in London at a New Year’s Parade.
The selected seniors are Journey Ramey, Chelsea Marioth, Sela Garand, Courtney King, Samantha Huggins, Stephanie Keller, Haleigh White and Patsy Miller.
“Most schools have one or two girls who make it, so having all eight of our seniors make the cut was so exciting,” Kern-Kildow said.
In addition to Big Walnut cheerleaders being awarded additional Superior Squad camp trophies, seniors Sela Garand and Patsy Miller were invited to try out for UCA summer camp staff.
“The entire camp experience was great for our cheerleaders,” Kern-Kildow added. “They traveled out of state, lived in dorms, bonded with others in our program, as well as met new people from around the country. I couldn’t be more proud of our cheerleaders.”
