A Columbus man died late Saturday after sustaining injuries from a motorcycle crash in Delaware County.

James Woods, 42, was traveling north on Worthington Road when he lost control of his vehicle, the Genoa Township Police Department reported.

Woods struck a tree on the right side of the road and landed in the street, Genoa Sgt. Rich Lyon said.

A passing driver advised police of the crash , which occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday.

Woods was alive when police arrived and was transported to St. Ann’s Hospital with serious back and head injuries, Lyon said. Woods died shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Woods was not wearing a helmet, Lyon said. It was unclear whether he could have survived had he been wearing the protective equipment, he said.

Investigators suspect that speed was the primary factor in the crash. A blood report is pending.
