Sunbury PD: Cemetery thief caught, victims sought

Dur­ing a recent Sun­bury Vil­lage Coun­cil meet­ing, vil­lage admin­is­tra­tor Dave Mar­tin reported that a thief or thieves had been steal­ing solar pow­ered lights from graves at Sun­bury Memo­r­ial Park, the vil­lage owned and main­tained cemetery.

Mar­tin said the Sun­bury Police Depart­ment promised to increase ceme­tery patrols, and even hinted that video sur­veil­lance mon­i­tor­ing might be used to cap­ture the perpetrators.

Last week, Sun­bury Police Chief Pat Ben­nett said an arrest had been made and solar pow­ered lights were recovered.

Ben­nett said only three thefts were reported to his depart­ment, and those solar lights have been returned to their right­ful owners.

But there’s more — lights, that is.

Ben­nett said more solar-powered lights were recov­ered than the ones reported stolen. He asked that any­one who has had a light stolen from the ceme­tery, but has not reported the theft, to stop by the Sun­bury Police Depart­ment to see if any of the excess lights belong to them.
