Scott Wetzel inducted into Big Walnut Wall of Fame

Scott Wet­zel, who posted a .787 win­ning per­cent­age in 11 sea­sons and led Big Wal­nut to the 2007 Divi­sion III OHSAA State Foot­ball cham­pi­onship, will be inducted into the Big Wal­nut Wall of Fame dur­ing pre-game cer­e­monies prior to the 2012 season-opener with West­er­ville Cen­tral on Fri­day, August 24 at Golden Eagle Stadium.

Wetzel’s coach­ing accom­plish­ments dur­ing his 11 sea­sons lead­ing the Golden Eagles ranks him among the top coaches in school his­tory. His 100–27 record at Big Wal­nut includes six Ohio Cap­i­tal Con­fer­ence Cap­i­tal Divi­sion cham­pi­onships (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008) and six OHSAA Play­off appear­ances (2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008). In addi­tion to cap­tur­ing the 2007 state title, Wetzel’s Golden Eagles reached the Divi­sion III Final Four in 2008, won Regional cham­pi­onships in 2007 and 2008 and were Regional run­nerups in 2001 and 2006.

He was a 4-time Dis­trict Coach of the Year hon­oree and a six-time OCC Cap­i­tal Divi­sion Coach of the Year, cap­ping his 11-year Big Wal­nut career by being voted the 2008 OHSFCA Coach of the Year, his biggest indi­vid­ual honor. He also served as a Big 33 assis­tant coach in 2009.

Wet­zel, a 1982 grad­u­ate of River Val­ley High School, attended Musk­ingum Col­lege where he earned three var­sity let­ters in foot­ball. He started his teach­ing career at Carey High School fol­lowed by stints at Mar­ion Pleas­ant, Buck­eye Val­ley and Dublin Scioto before com­ing to Big Wal­nut where for the past 14 years he has taught Health, Phys­i­cal Edu­ca­tion and Spe­cial Edu­ca­tion as well as serv­ing as CPR Instructor.

In addi­tion to his 11 sea­sons as head foot­ball coach at Big Wal­nut, Wet­zel led the Buck­eye Val­ley pro­gram for five sea­sons and has a record of 131–46 (.740) in his 16 sea­sons. He also served as head wrestling coach for two sea­sons at Carey and four sea­sons at Pleas­ant as well as head base­ball coach for one sea­son at Buck­eye Valley.

Scott and his wife, Tami, have been mar­ried for 24 years. She grad­u­ated from Ohio Uni­ver­sity and is employed at the DSW home office as a plan­ning man­ager. They have three chil­dren, includ­ing two daugh­ters, Erin, who will be a junior at Big Wal­nut this school year, and Emi­lie, a 2011 grad­u­ate of Big Wal­nut; and a son, Ethan, a 2008 grad­u­ate of Big Walnut.

Erin is a mem­ber of the Golden Eagles’ var­sity foot­ball and bas­ket­ball cheer­lead­ing squads as well as a mem­ber of Stu­dent Coun­cil and Eagles First Flight.

Emi­lie was a mem­ber of the 2010 Big Wal­nut vol­ley­ball team that fin­ished sec­ond in the OHSAA Divi­sion II State Tour­na­ment. She is cur­rently attend­ing the Uni­ver­sity of Akron and major­ing in Busi­ness Administration.

Ethan, who was the start­ing quar­ter­back on the Golden Eagles’ 2007 State foot­ball cham­pi­onship team, grad­u­ated from Musk­ingum Uni­ver­sity in May where he was a four-year starter on the Fight­ing Muskies’ foot­ball team as an out­side line­backer. He is cur­rently attend­ing grad­u­ate school at Otter­bein Uni­ver­sity where is a grad­u­ate assis­tant on the Car­di­nals’ foot­ball team coach­ing inside linebackers.
