Scott Wetzel inducted into Big Walnut Wall of Fame

Scott Wetzel, who posted a .787 winning percentage in 11 seasons and led Big Walnut to the 2007 Division III OHSAA State Football championship, will be inducted into the Big Walnut Wall of Fame during pre-game ceremonies prior to the 2012 season-opener with Westerville Central on Friday, August 24 at Golden Eagle Stadium.
Wetzel’s coaching accomplishments during his 11 seasons leading the Golden Eagles ranks him among the top coaches in school history. His 100–27 record at Big Walnut includes six Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division championships (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008) and six OHSAA Playoff appearances (2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008). In addition to capturing the 2007 state title, Wetzel’s Golden Eagles reached the Division III Final Four in 2008, won Regional championships in 2007 and 2008 and were Regional runnerups in 2001 and 2006.
He was a 4-time District Coach of the Year honoree and a six-time OCC Capital Division Coach of the Year, capping his 11-year Big Walnut career by being voted the 2008 OHSFCA Coach of the Year, his biggest individual honor. He also served as a Big 33 assistant coach in 2009.
Wetzel, a 1982 graduate of River Valley High School, attended Muskingum College where he earned three varsity letters in football. He started his teaching career at Carey High School followed by stints at Marion Pleasant, Buckeye Valley and Dublin Scioto before coming to Big Walnut where for the past 14 years he has taught Health, Physical Education and Special Education as well as serving as CPR Instructor.
In addition to his 11 seasons as head football coach at Big Walnut, Wetzel led the Buckeye Valley program for five seasons and has a record of 131–46 (.740) in his 16 seasons. He also served as head wrestling coach for two seasons at Carey and four seasons at Pleasant as well as head baseball coach for one season at Buckeye Valley.
Scott and his wife, Tami, have been married for 24 years. She graduated from Ohio University and is employed at the DSW home office as a planning manager. They have three children, including two daughters, Erin, who will be a junior at Big Walnut this school year, and Emilie, a 2011 graduate of Big Walnut; and a son, Ethan, a 2008 graduate of Big Walnut.
Erin is a member of the Golden Eagles’ varsity football and basketball cheerleading squads as well as a member of Student Council and Eagles First Flight.
Emilie was a member of the 2010 Big Walnut volleyball team that finished second in the OHSAA Division II State Tournament. She is currently attending the University of Akron and majoring in Business Administration.
Ethan, who was the starting quarterback on the Golden Eagles’ 2007 State football championship team, graduated from Muskingum University in May where he was a four-year starter on the Fighting Muskies’ football team as an outside linebacker. He is currently attending graduate school at Otterbein University where is a graduate assistant on the Cardinals’ football team coaching inside linebackers.
