Looking for a family-oriented way to get some physical activity, and at the same time contribute to a worthy cause? Well, your conundrum is solved because the Third Annual Big Nut Strut covers both bases.

The Big Nut Strut is a 5K (3.1-mile) family-friendly run/walk event designed to raise money for the Big Walnut Local School District’s three elementary building’s PTO’s. Got children too young to do the 5K? No problem, because there’s even a Big Nut Strut Kid’s Fun Run.

At 12 noon on Sunday, October 7, the Big Nut Strut gets underway at the southeast corner of Sunbury Mills Plaza, and entry fees have been kept low so the entire family can participate without breaking the proverbial piggy bank.

The Kids Fun Run registration fee is $10, for runners and walkers age 5 to 11 registration fee is $20, and the registration fee for all others is $30.

All 5K participants will receive a free Big Nut Strut Technical T-shirt on race day; those who pre-registered before September 14 will receive their T-shirt on race day. All 5K participants will also receive finish line refreshments, a grab bag with money-off coupons and other free items, and with their race number be automatically entered to win door prizes.

Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in each age group. The groups are ages 5–6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12–14, 15–19, 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60 and older.

Kid’s Fun Run participants will each receive a medal.

Channel 10’s Jeff Hogan is planning to attend and participate, as well as short visit from Brutus Buckeye during the Kids Fun Run, said race organizer Sandie Knapp.

Knapp said while all Big Nut Strut proceeds will go to district elementary school PTO’s, race participants can direct their registration fee to the elementary school PTO of their choice by checking a box on the registration form; or check a box to have the fee placed in a pool to be divided equally between the Big Walnut Elementary School, General Rosecrans Elementary and Hylen Souders Elementary PTO’s.

And remember, if you completed the Galena United Methodist Church Moving with the Spirit 5K and Run For John, you also need to complete the Big Nut Strut to qualify for the Fall 5K Grand Prix drawing prizes. There’s nothing else to do. Complete all three races and you are automatically entered to win a host of additional prizes, including Frontrunner gift certificates, a round of golf at Bent Tree, Jerky from Virgil’s Jerky Plus, a Sunbury Cleaners Gift Certificate, a one-year subscription to The Sunbury News and more.

Big Nut Strut organizers are still seeking partners in the community to donate door prizes – business coupons and gift cards, gift baskets, and merchandise.
