Dan Morgan, who recently received his 5th Degree Black Belt from Taekwondo America, teaches at Perdue’s Sunbury Taekwondo. But Morgan recently stepped out of the studio to spend eight days teaching Taekwondo during Physical Education classes at General Rosecrans Elementary School.
Morgan said he taught two full rotations with each classroom of students coming in one time every four days.
“We practiced basic White Belt moves, blocks and punches,” Morgan said. “With older kids we worked on the fundamentals of self-defense and how to get loose from a grab.”
GRE Physical Education teacher Jody Grieger said the students enjoyed the Taekwondo sessions because, for most of them, they were learning something new.
“They enjoyed the different variations of moves and techniques that were taught,” Grieger said. “The students also enjoyed asking Mr. Morgan questions about the history of Taekwondo.”
Grieger also said that Taekwondo is not just exercise, but brings value to physical education classes by promoting self-responsibility, self-control and spatial awareness.
“These are all skills that students can use throughout their lifetimes,” Grieger said.
Perdue’s Sunbury Taekwondo is located at 130 Burrer Drive in Sunbury.
