Kenneth M. “Kenny” Crowl, 81, Sunbury passed away peacefully and suddenly Thursday, September 27, 2012, at home.
The lifelong area resident was born on May 23, 1931, in Sunbury to the late Gerald L. and Alta L. (Ross) Crowl. He was a graduate of Sunbury High School in 1949. It was at the Sunbury Five and Dime that he met Loraine Roof. He married his sweetheart Loraine in 1949 and together they shared 25 wonderful years, until her untimely passing on July 4, 1975.
Kenny worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, retiring as postmaster of the Sunbury office. At one time he owned and operated both the Sunbury Coin Laundry and Crowl’s Crème Corner.
He was actively involved in the Sunbury area community, both as a business owner and in numerous clubs and organizations. A longtime member of the Sunbury United Methodist Church, he sang in the church choir for 60 years. He was a charter member of the Porter Township Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the BST&G Fire Department. He served on the Sunbury Village Board of Public Affairs. As a 53-year member of the Sunbury Lions Club, he held almost every club office. He was a member of Sparrow Lodge No. 400 F&AM, as well as an active member of the Big Walnut Historical Society, Meyers Inn, Delaware County Pioneers and an avid patron of Yum-EE Donuts.
In his little free time, he enjoyed working with wood, restoring furniture and collecting antique cars. His favorites were his childhood 1934 Plymouth Coupe and 1977 Gold Cadillac. He could easily be spotted with his trade mark 43074 Ohio license plate.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Gerald W. (Barbara J.) Crowl of Sunbury, Thomas D. (Barbara J.) Crowl of Blacklick, Douglas P. (DiAnna M.) Crowl of Sunbury and Karen Susan Bennett of Taccoa, Georgia; 10 grandchildren: Jessica Crowl, Jennifer Schermerhorn, Joslyn Crowl, Lindsay Crowl, Loren Spaulding, Amanda Isganitis, Kenneth Crowl, Shane, Richard and Robert Wagner; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother: William “Jim” Crowl of Sunbury; sisters: Joan (Leo) Ulery of Ironton, and Jean Roy and Linda (Don) Kroninger, both of Sunbury.
Services were held Tuesday (October 2) at the Sunbury United Methodist Church. Burial took place in Sunbury Memorial Park. Arrangements were entrusted to the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury.
