2013 Relay Kick-off Party set Saturday at Sunbury Skate Club

The 2012 Amer­i­can can­cer Soci­ety Relay For Life sea­son ended on August 31, and already Big Wal­nut Relay For Life orga­niz­ers are plan­ning ahead to 2013’s June 7 and 8 Relay For Life at Big Wal­nut High School.

The 2013 Big Wal­nut Relay For Life Kick-off Party will be held this Sat­ur­day, Novem­ber 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sun­bury Skate Club, a.k.a. Big Wal­nut Skate Club, 345 McGill Street in Sun­bury, behind VFW Post 8736.

“All Big Wal­nut res­i­dents are invited to help kick off the Amer­i­can Can­cer Soci­ety Relay For Life of Big Wal­nut,” said local ACS rep­re­sen­ta­tive Andrea Perl­man. “This com­mu­nity cel­e­bra­tion is open to any­one who wants to learn more about Relay For Life and how to get involved.”

Perl­man explained that Relay For Life is a com­mu­nity event that hon­ors can­cer sur­vivors, cur­rent can­cer patients and care­givers. Relay also pays trib­ute to those who have lost their bat­tle with cancer.

“The Relay For Life kick-off party is an oppor­tu­nity for all Big Wal­nut res­i­dents to come together to kick off the Relay For Life of Big Wal­nut and learn more about the event and how to get involved,” Perl­man said. “Dur­ing kick-off, we’ll also be cel­e­brat­ing our suc­cess and enjoy­ing a night at the Big Wal­nut Skate Club. Best of all, every­one is welcome.”

The Amer­i­can Can­cer Soci­ety Relay For Life is an overnight com­mu­nity cel­e­bra­tion where indi­vid­u­als and teams camp out, bar­be­cue, dance and take turns walk­ing around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight can­cer. At night­fall, par­tic­i­pants will light hun­dreds of lumi­naria around the track in a mov­ing cer­e­mony to honor can­cer sur­vivors, as well as friends and fam­ily mem­bers lost to the disease.
