Each year, members of Big Walnut High School Student Council hold a Canned Food Drive before Thanksgiving to help stock the Big Walnut Friends Who Share Food Pantry; and this year’s food drive netted $779.38 and approximately about 600 nonperishable canned and boxed food items during the week and a half food drive.
Big Walnut Friends Who Share food coordinators John and Marilyn Powers said learning to help others has become a tradition among Big Walnut students.
“It’s especially meaningful when students reach out and help those who are struggling in their own community,” John Powers said. “And the holidays are always a good time to donate to the Friends Who Share Food Pantry. This is definitely a time of need.”
The Big Walnut Friends Who Share Store at 216 High Street, Sunbury, is open to those in need on Wednesday mornings from 9 until 11:30 a.m., and during the evening on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30 until 8 p.m.
On the second Saturday of each month, senior citizens can visit the Friends Who Share Store from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Volunteers help out at the center from 9 until 11:30 a.m. every Monday morning. The store accepts donated items on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 until 11:30 a.m.
