BW Student Council Food Drive benefits BW Friends Who Share

Each year, mem­bers of Big Wal­nut High School Stu­dent Coun­cil hold a Canned Food Drive before Thanks­giv­ing to help stock the Big Wal­nut Friends Who Share Food Pantry; and this year’s food drive net­ted $779.38 and approx­i­mately about 600 non­per­ish­able canned and boxed food items dur­ing the week and a half food drive.

Big Wal­nut Friends Who Share food coor­di­na­tors John and Mar­i­lyn Pow­ers said learn­ing to help oth­ers has become a tra­di­tion among Big Wal­nut students.

“It’s espe­cially mean­ing­ful when stu­dents reach out and help those who are strug­gling in their own com­mu­nity,” John Pow­ers said. “And the hol­i­days are always a good time to donate to the Friends Who Share Food Pantry. This is def­i­nitely a time of need.”

The Big Wal­nut Friends Who Share Store at 216 High Street, Sun­bury, is open to those in need on Wednes­day morn­ings from 9 until 11:30 a.m., and dur­ing the evening on the sec­ond and fourth Tues­day of each month from 6:30 until 8 p.m.

On the sec­ond Sat­ur­day of each month, senior cit­i­zens can visit the Friends Who Share Store from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Vol­un­teers help out at the cen­ter from 9 until 11:30 a.m. every Mon­day morn­ing. The store accepts donated items on Mon­days and Wednes­days from 9 until 11:30 a.m.
