Sunbury Village Administrator Dave Martin was in a motorcycle accident Sunday evening, November 17, on Ohio 95 near Fredricktown. Martin had struck a deer. When first responders found him, he was laying by the road; his motorcycle and the deer were in a cornfield.

A Life-Flight helicopter took Martin to Grant Hospital in Columbus where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to head injuries (Martin was wearing a helmet) nine of his ribs are broken. Six on the right side are broken in two places.

During surgery on the Monday following the accident doctors inserted four titanium plates and 37 screws. Martin was on a ventilator and breathing tube as of Wednesday evening; he was off the ventilator by Friday.

Unconfirmed reports from Sunbury Village officials, who are in daily contact with Martin’s family, indicate that Martin will be in the hospital for two to four weeks.

Area residents who would like to follow Martin’s progress and leave messages may log on to < caringbridge.org/visit/davemartinsunbury >.
