The day after a man died from a gunshot wound, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced it will be investigating the case as a homicide.

Dontee Gervins, 29, of Columbus died November 18 at a Columbus hospital after sustaining a gun shot wound to his back, according to the DCSO.

The shooting allegedly took place November 9. A Harlem Township resident in the 6000 block of Red Bank Road told police Gervins knocked on her front door while lying on the ground, saying he had been shot.

The caller told dispatchers she did not hear any gun shots before Gervins began asking for help.

While she waited on the line, she said she heard Gervins on his cell phone say, “Don’t say anything to anybody.”

She did not open the door. Deputies arrived about 10 minutes after the call was placed and transported Gervins to the hospital.

One suspect has been identified, according to DCSO.

Investigators were reportedly working to see if the shooting was drug-related. Gervins had a history of robbery and drug-related arrests eight years ago in Franklin County.

Investigators asked anyone with information about this case to contact the DCSO Detective Division at 740–833-2830.
