It was the Year of the Defense for Brett Weiss’ Big Walnut boys soccer team which was recognized at the team’s annual awards night held Wednesday, November 14, in the BWHS Cafeteria.
Five players, senior Ethan Green, juniors Bradyn Dronsfield, Nick Herbert and Dominic Zumpone along with sophomore Noah Gibson shared the Defensive Player of the Year Award — and four of the five will be back for the Golden Eagles’ 2013 campaign.
Defense was the key for Weiss’ troops who posted a 12–7-1 record for the Golden Eagles who finished the season as Division II Central District runners-up after tying Delaware Hayes for fourth place with a 3–3-1 record in the Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division.
Olentangy Orange captured the Capital Division crown with a 7–0-0 record. New Albany and Olentangy tied for second with 5–2-0 marks.
Big Walnut’s offense was paced by senior Shane Facemyer and Austin Foor who were recognized as the Golden Eagles’ Offensive Players of the Year. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Sholl was voted the recipient of the Most Improved Player Award. Junior Nathan Mickley and Green shared the Coaches Award.
Five members of the team were singled out as All-OCC honorees, including Facemyer and Foor who were voted to the First Team; Dronsfield, a Second Team selection; Zumpone, a Special Mention pick; and Gibson, an Honorable Mention choice. Facemyer and Foor completed their careers by being named to the Division II All-Central District First team.
Weiss, assisted by coaching staff members Jason McLead, Archie Foor, Milan Orr and Robbie Williamson, awarded 20 varsity letters to members of the 33-player squad. Facemyer and Foor, who each received their Varsity Blanket as four-year letter men, led the letter presentations. They also received their Senior Plaque.
Third-year letters were presented to Dronsfield and Zumpone while second-year letters went to juniors Maxwell Denton and Mickley as well as to sophomore Adam Carifa.
First-year letter winners included seniors Alex Bravender and Green; juniors Cameron Evans, Luke Hartings, Herbert and Sholl; and sophomores Bobby Bogantz, Iain Kirsch, Tyler Ledbetter, Jason Vazquez, Kevin Vazquez, Kyle Wurm and Gibson.
Sixteen of the 20 letter men will return for what promises to be another competitive season for the Golden Eagles.
Thirteen team members earned their junior varsity awards, including junior Jeremy Humbert; sophomores Barento Abdurehman, John Civin, Alexander Fitch, John Osburn, Anthony Pavuk, Jacob Thompson and Jacob Will; and freshmen Andrew Cochran, Caleb Gibson, Jacob Hrusovsky, Taylor Kline and Matthew Whyde.
Ten members of the Golden Eagle squad were recognized as Big Walnut Scholar Athletes (Varsity Letter Winner, 3.20 Grade Point Average), including Bogantz, Denton, Evans, Noah Gibson, Hartings, Kirsch, Sholl, Kevin Vazquez, Wurm and Zumpone.
