1st Thursday Book Group

Com­mu­nity Library invites you to the 1st Thurs­day Book Group on Thurs­day, Jan­u­ary 3, from 7 to 8 p.m.

The book for the Jan­u­ary meet­ing is Say You’re One of Them, by Ulwen Akpan. A col­lec­tion of tales about mod­ern African chil­dren in cri­sis includes “An Ex-Mas Feast”, in which an eight-year-old child shares in his family’s sac­ri­fices to obtain enough food and enable his edu­ca­tion. Say You’re One of Them won the Com­mon­wealth Writ­ers’ Prize for Best First Book (Africa Region) 2009 and PEN/Beyond Mar­gins Award 2009, and was a final­ist for the Los Ange­les Times Art Sei­den­baum Award for First Fic­tion. It is an Oprah’s Book Club book.

The book for the Feb­ru­ary meet­ing is Devil in the White City.

Extra copies of the fea­tured book are avail­able at the library to par­tic­i­pants. The group meets on the 1st Thurs­day of each month.
