Big Walnut captures 19-team Mount Vernon swim meet

Big Walnut continued its stellar start to the 2012–13 swim season, outpacing 19 other teams to win the always-competitive Mount Vernon Small School Invitational Saturday at Kenyon College.
The Golden Eagles captured top honors with a combined team score of 504 — a mark just better than that of runner-up Tri-Valley’s 495 and third-place Cambridge’s 448. The win was the team’s third straight.
Michelle Stefaniak led the charge for the girls, winning the 50 freestyle in :26.54 seconds. She also picked up runner-up honors in the 200 freestyle with an effort of 2 minutes, 13.53 seconds.
Other top scorers on the girls’ side included Claire Chatterton, Jessica Osburn and Josie Sweeney-Rogers, who teamed up with Stefaniak to finish second in the 200 medley relay in 2:07.09; and Katie Von Hollen, who teamed up with Sweeney-Rogers, Osburn and Stefaniak to finish second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:52.64. Osburn was also solid as an individual, finishing second in the 100 breast with an effort of 1:17.51.
Other point producers included Alexis Newman, Aria Dockham, Alison Hager, Amber Shaheen, Bethany Rannebarger, Alayna Small and Meghan Maynard.
On the boys’ side, Ben Stefaniak, Carter Marsch, Brant Weiss and Joel Windle led the way with a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.08). The duo of Jens Paglialunga and Joel Windle, meanwhile, combined with Weiss and Stefaniak to close third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.90). Marsch finished fourth in the 100 freestyle as an individual (1:11.98) and Caleb MacDonald, Trevor Williams, Sean Conley, Jacob Watson, Matt Heiden, Justin Beyer, Bret Stacy, Gabe Swim and Austin Wiggers also picked up important points during the Golden Eagles’ victory.
