Big Walnut sweeps Northridge Viking Splash meet

The Golden Eagles opened their 2012–13 swim sea­son with a splash.

Big Wal­nut cap­tured both the boys and girls team titles at the John­stown North­ridge Viking Splash waged Sat­ur­day at the New Albany Pool. The Golden Eagle boys scored 87 points to out­dis­tance run­nerup Mar­ion Pleas­ant by 26 points while the girls tal­lied 120 points to fin­ish 53 points ahead of sec­ond place Spartans.

In the boys divi­sion, Big Wal­nut was led by sopho­more Carter Marsch who scored wins in both the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 0:57.18 sec­onds and the 100-yard breast­stroke in 1 minute, 12.10 sec­onds as well as swim­ming legs on the vic­to­ri­ous 200-yard med­ley and freestyle relays.

In the Golden Eagles’ two relay vic­to­ries, Ben Ste­fa­niak, Jens Paglialunga, Justin Beyer and Marsch teamed to cap­ture the 200 med­ley in 2:02.37 while Brant Weiss, Joel Win­dle, Marsch and Paglialunga com­bined to take the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.52.

Golden Eagle win­ners in the girls divi­sion included sopho­more Michelle Ste­fa­niak in both the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle in respec­tive times of 0:26.37 and 5:54.54, sopho­more Katie Von Hollen won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:32.17 and sopho­more Jes­sica Osburn in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.83.

In the relay races, Big Wal­nut was led by Claire Chat­ter­ton, Osburn, Von Hollen and Ste­fa­niak in the 200 med­ley with a win­ning time of 2:08.57 and by Josie Sweeney-Rogers, Alayna Small, Osburn and Ste­fa­niak in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.06.

The Golden Eagle boys notched two sec­onds with Paglialunga fin­ish­ing behind Marsch in the 100 freestyle (0:58.55) and the quar­tet of Sean Con­ley, Win­dle, Weiss and Ste­fa­niak (4:09.52) trail­ing Mar­ion Pleas­ant in the 400 free relay. They added a trio of thirds with Caleb McDon­ald in the 200 freestyle (2:39.0), Jacob Wat­son, Matt Hei­den, Justin Beyer and Con­ley in the 200 free relay (1:55.08), and Ste­fa­niak in the 500 free (6:40.98).

Big Walnut’s girls added two sec­onds and six thirds. Tak­ing sec­onds were Sweeney-Rogers in the 100 but­ter­fly (1:10.97) and the quar­tet of Ali­son Hager, Chat­ter­ton, Small and Sweeney-Rogers in the 400 freestyle relay (4:38.91). Thirds were scored by Bethany Ran­nebarger in the 200 free (2:43.53), Chat­ter­ton in the 50 free (0:29.21) and 100 back­stroke (1:18.49), Sweeney-Rogers in the 200 indi­vid­ual med­ley (2:39.74), Osburn in the 100 breast­stroke (1:17.28) and by Aria Dock­ham, Jen­nifer Hupp, Ran­nebarger and Von Hollen in the 400 free relay (4:50.10).

Big Wal­nut, which com­peted in the Mar­ion Pleas­ant Quad­ran­gu­lar on Wednes­day, will com­pete in the Mount Ver­non Invi­ta­tional on Sat­ur­day at 10 a.m. at Kenyon College.
