Big Walnut sweeps Northridge Viking Splash meet

The Golden Eagles opened their 2012–13 swim season with a splash.
Big Walnut captured both the boys and girls team titles at the Johnstown Northridge Viking Splash waged Saturday at the New Albany Pool. The Golden Eagle boys scored 87 points to outdistance runnerup Marion Pleasant by 26 points while the girls tallied 120 points to finish 53 points ahead of second place Spartans.
In the boys division, Big Walnut was led by sophomore Carter Marsch who scored wins in both the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 0:57.18 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 12.10 seconds as well as swimming legs on the victorious 200-yard medley and freestyle relays.
In the Golden Eagles’ two relay victories, Ben Stefaniak, Jens Paglialunga, Justin Beyer and Marsch teamed to capture the 200 medley in 2:02.37 while Brant Weiss, Joel Windle, Marsch and Paglialunga combined to take the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.52.
Golden Eagle winners in the girls division included sophomore Michelle Stefaniak in both the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle in respective times of 0:26.37 and 5:54.54, sophomore Katie Von Hollen won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:32.17 and sophomore Jessica Osburn in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.83.
In the relay races, Big Walnut was led by Claire Chatterton, Osburn, Von Hollen and Stefaniak in the 200 medley with a winning time of 2:08.57 and by Josie Sweeney-Rogers, Alayna Small, Osburn and Stefaniak in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.06.
The Golden Eagle boys notched two seconds with Paglialunga finishing behind Marsch in the 100 freestyle (0:58.55) and the quartet of Sean Conley, Windle, Weiss and Stefaniak (4:09.52) trailing Marion Pleasant in the 400 free relay. They added a trio of thirds with Caleb McDonald in the 200 freestyle (2:39.0), Jacob Watson, Matt Heiden, Justin Beyer and Conley in the 200 free relay (1:55.08), and Stefaniak in the 500 free (6:40.98).
Big Walnut’s girls added two seconds and six thirds. Taking seconds were Sweeney-Rogers in the 100 butterfly (1:10.97) and the quartet of Alison Hager, Chatterton, Small and Sweeney-Rogers in the 400 freestyle relay (4:38.91). Thirds were scored by Bethany Rannebarger in the 200 free (2:43.53), Chatterton in the 50 free (0:29.21) and 100 backstroke (1:18.49), Sweeney-Rogers in the 200 individual medley (2:39.74), Osburn in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.28) and by Aria Dockham, Jennifer Hupp, Rannebarger and Von Hollen in the 400 free relay (4:50.10).
Big Walnut, which competed in the Marion Pleasant Quadrangular on Wednesday, will compete in the Mount Vernon Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kenyon College.
