Golden Eagles girls close out Mt. Vernon with 24-4 run

Big Walnut withstood a huge Mount Vernon run with an even bigger one down the stretch in recording up a 43–37 Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division decision Friday night in Mount Vernon.
Big Walnut (5–2, 3–2 OCC), after taking an 11–7 lead into the second quarter, saw host Mount Vernon embark on a 19–4 run to close the half.
Mount Vernon (6–4, 2–3 OCC) outscored Big Walnut 7–4 in the third to make it a 33–19 game with eight minutes remaining, but the Golden Eagles closed the game with a 24–4 run to pull out the 6-point margin of victory
Sara Petty led the Big Walnut charge with 14 points in the victory. Makenna Hammond was also steady, finishing with 10, while Emily Chucta poured in eight points.
BIG WALNUT 50, WATKINS MEMORIAL 19 — The Golden Eagles cruised past the visiting Warriors last Tuesday (December 18), using defense to get the job done in a 31-point Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division victory.
Big Walnut (4–2, 2–2 OCC), limited Watkins Memorial (1–7, 0–4 OCC) to just four opening-half points, two in each quarter, to take a 22–4 lead in to the intermission .
The Golden Eagles would come back out and outscore the Warriors 18–6 in the third period to open up a 40–10 lead going into the final 8 minutes.
Junior post Skylar Fleak fueled the Golden Eagle attack with a game-high 18 points. Junior Sara Petty joined Fleak with nine points. Senior forward Emily Chucta followed with 6 while sophomore guard Erica Boehm added 5 points.
Lou Nickel led the Warriors with 12 of Watkins Memorial’s 19 points.
VARSITY GAME WITH CAMBRIDGE MOVED TO 1 P.M. SATURDAY — Big Walnut’s girls varsity basketball game with Cambridge scheduled for Saturday will tip off at 1 p.m., not 2:30 p.m. as originally announced.
Cambridge does not have a JV girls basketball team.
