Golden Eagles girls close out Mt. Vernon with 24-4 run

Big Wal­nut with­stood a huge Mount Ver­non run with an even big­ger one down the stretch in record­ing up a 43–37 Ohio Cap­i­tal Con­fer­ence Cap­i­tal Divi­sion deci­sion Fri­day night in Mount Vernon.

Big Wal­nut (5–2, 3–2 OCC), after tak­ing an 11–7 lead into the sec­ond quar­ter, saw host Mount Ver­non embark on a 19–4 run to close the half.

Mount Ver­non (6–4, 2–3 OCC) outscored Big Wal­nut 7–4 in the third to make it a 33–19 game with eight min­utes remain­ing, but the Golden Eagles closed the game with a 24–4 run to pull out the 6-point mar­gin of victory

Sara Petty led the Big Wal­nut charge with 14 points in the vic­tory. Makenna Ham­mond was also steady, fin­ish­ing with 10, while Emily Chucta poured in eight points.

BIG WALNUT 50, WATKINS MEMORIAL 19 — The Golden Eagles cruised past the vis­it­ing War­riors last Tues­day (Decem­ber 18), using defense to get the job done in a 31-point Ohio Cap­i­tal Con­fer­ence Cap­i­tal Divi­sion victory.

Big Wal­nut (4–2, 2–2 OCC), lim­ited Watkins Memo­r­ial (1–7, 0–4 OCC) to just four opening-half points, two in each quar­ter, to take a 22–4 lead in to the intermission .

The Golden Eagles would come back out and outscore the War­riors 18–6 in the third period to open up a 40–10 lead going into the final 8 minutes.

Junior post Sky­lar Fleak fueled the Golden Eagle attack with a game-high 18 points. Junior Sara Petty joined Fleak with nine points. Senior for­ward Emily Chucta fol­lowed with 6 while sopho­more guard Erica Boehm added 5 points.

Lou Nickel led the War­riors with 12 of Watkins Memorial’s 19 points.

VARSITY GAME WITH CAMBRIDGE MOVED TO 1 P.M. SATURDAY — Big Walnut’s girls var­sity bas­ket­ball game with Cam­bridge sched­uled for Sat­ur­day will tip off at 1 p.m., not 2:30 p.m. as orig­i­nally announced.

Cam­bridge does not have a JV girls bas­ket­ball team.
