Students at General Rosecrans Elementary School held their annual General Rosecrans Battle Hunger Food Drive to help stock the Big Walnut Friends Who Share Food Pantry. The students had a goal of 1,500 non-perishable food items and beat their goal by collecting 1,778 items.
There was a school-wide contest to see which class collected the most food items, with a party of their choice as a prize for the winning class. Virginia Crawford’s third grade class took home the bacon, so to speak, by bringing in 434 items; Katie Fox’s students came in second with 261 items.
GRE Food Drive Coordinator David Lee said both classes did so well that each would get a party of their choice.
Third grade student Jaiden Hilton said the food drive is a good thing.
“It’s really good that we could gather a lot of food for the poor in our community,” the third grader said.
Lee thanked LEADERS Moving & Storage for partnering with GRE for the third year of the General Rosecrans Battle Hunger Food Drive.
“Thanks to LEADERS, the students and the teachers we have shown again that we have the most generous school community at Big Walnut,” Lee said. “Our students have a genuine concern for their neighbors and friends.”
