During last Wednesday’s (December 19) Sunbury Village Council meeting, Sunbury Mayor Tommy Hatfield announced that council member Bill Metzler is resigning from council effective December 31, citing personal health reasons.

Hatfield said Metzler’s resignation has been hard to accept, and he also understood that it was a tough decision for Bill and Janet Metzler to make.

“They have been in this community since 2005, and they’ve become an integral part of our community,” Hatfield said. “Before Bill became a council member he spent two years at every one of our meetings. To put that kind of time in to prepare for this job is, to me, amazing.”

Hatfield said that Metzler’s tenure on village council had made him – Hatfield — a better person and a better council person

“And Bill and Janet were not just active in these chambers,” Hatfield said. “When it was time to pull weeds and mulch they were the first ones in line to show up.”

Metzler began his four-year term at the council dais in January of 2010. With his formal resignation dated December 31, Sunbury Village Council members have 30 days to fill the vacant seat.

Should council members fail to fill the vacancy created by Metzler’s resignation within the statutory 30 days, Hatfield, as mayor, would be required to appoint someone to fill the seat until the end of Metzler’s term in office – December 31, 2013.

Hatfield said any village resident who has lived in Sunbury for at least one year and who is interested in filling the one-year vacancy on Sunbury Village Council should send a letter of interest, along with a resume to Village of Sunbury Mayor Tommy Hatfield, before close of business on Friday, January 11, 2013.

Hatfield said the letter and resume could also be delivered in person to the Village of Sunbury Municipal Building, 9 East Granville Street in Sunbury; or via regular mail to Village of Sunbury, P.O. Box 508, Sunbury, OH 43074; or by e-mail to Tommy Hatfield at < VillageofSunburyOhio@gmail.com <mailto:VillageofSunburyOhio@gmail.com> >.

Janet Metzler has resigned from her at-large position as a member of village council’s Parks & Safety Committe.

Members of the Parks Committee are also seeking to fill the vacant at-large Parks & Safety Committee position. To express an interest in serving on Parks send a letter of interest and a resume to the village administration office, or email mayor Hatfield, or call the administration office at 740–965-2684 for additional information.
