The Genoa Township Board of Trustees signed a new garbage and curbside recycling service contract with Rumpke saving residents $1.77 per month per household at a total savings of $21.24 per household over the next year. Considering the 8,000 homes in Genoa Township, the new contract represents a township-wide savings of $169,920 in 2013 over last year’s contract.

The township recently rebid a three-year contract with Rumpke that ended on December 31, 2012, with a quarterly fee of $52.14 per household. The township bid the contract and had five service providers request a bid package, but only one provider submitted a bid. Rumpke rebid the service at $46.44 quarterly per household, a savings of 11 percent.

The 13-month contract includes a three-year renewal option. The renewal option also includes a clause allowing the township to put the contract out for rebid after the initial 13 months.

Genoa Township plans to collaborate with Orange Township. Orange has a contract expiring in 13 months allowing that township to collectively bid services with the objective of achieving an even lower rate for residents. Genoa Township will also seek other Delaware County political subdivisions to join in the collaborative effort.

“I’m beyond proud of the work that was done on this contract by both our Administrator Paul Wise and Rumpke,” said trustee vice-chair Rick Carfagna. “Anytime we can preserve the existing levels of service while also reducing rates for township households by 11 percent, that’s something worth celebrating.”

Trustee chair Barb Lewis said that the township’s goal is to strategically achieve even longer-term savings for township residents by joining with neighboring jurisdictions.

“The Rumpke Contract Renewal is another great example of how our employees work to keep residents’ costs for services as low as possible — in this case even lower,” Lewis added.

The new curbside service contract continues to offer a 10 percent discount to seniors — households with a head of household who is 62 years of age or older.

The new contract continues to offer the option to rent a 96-gallon, wheeled trash receptacle for $1.50 per month, and the option for 65-gallon and 95-gallon curbside recycling totes with lids at $1.50 per month. An 18-gallon recycling tote will continue to be provided free of charge to each resident.

The Genoa Township Administrative Offices are located at the Genoa Township Hall, 5111 South Old 3C Highway, Westerville. The offices are regularly open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
