Golden Eagle boys end road skid with 73-41 victory

Big Walnut bounced back from two tough road losses to hand Columbus Horizon Science Academy a 72–41 non-conference setback Saturday night at The Ohio School for The Deaf.
Senior Adam Shaheen, who led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, ignited a 20-point second-quarter explosion with 9 points, including a pair of threes, to send Big Walnut (5–6) into the break with a 32–16 halftime advantage.
Eric Myers’ club came back out and outscored the Hawks 40–25 in the second half to put the game in the Golden Eagle win column.
Dom Holsten, 6-foot-1 freshman, came off the bench to back Shaheen with 9 points. Four Golden Eagles, including juniors Chase LaVeer, Nick Herbert and Logan Boyd along with sophomore Michael Buckles, followed Shaheen and Holsten in the scoring column with 8 points apiece. The quartet combined for 20 final-half points.
D. Hill and K. Anduis paced the Hawks with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
NEW ALBANY 73, BIG WALNUT 31 — The Golden Eagles struggled from the start, dropping Friday’s Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division clash to the host Eagles in New Albany.
Big Walnut (4–6, 1–4 OCC) was outscored in each of the four quarters, with host New Albany (8–1, 5–0 OCC) closing the game on a 23–6 run to account for the 42-point winning margin.
Adam Shaheen was the lone Golden Eagle to score more than five points, pouring in a team-best 17 in the setback. Logan Boyd followed with 5 and Nick Herbert and Zachary Asher with 3 points apiece.
NEWARK CATHOLIC 60, BIG WALNUT 40 — Jeff Speelman poured in a game-high 23 points and unbeaten Newark Catholic rolled to a 20-point win over Big Walnut in the First Federal Holiday Classic championship game played Saturday, December 28, in Newark.
Bishop Ready (4–4) captured the consolation contest with a 47–28 decision over Johnstown (5–4).
Newark Catholic (6–0) raced out to a 22–11 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The Green Wave, who got 10 points from David Meurer, led 32–20 at the break before outscoring Big Walnut (4–5) 28–20 in the second half.
Logan Boyd, who joined Chase LaVeer with 2 treys, paced the Golden Eagles with 10 points. Zach Laughman followed with Boyd with 7 points. Adam Shaheen and LaVeer each finished with 6 points apiece.
