Golden Eagle boys end road skid with 73-41 victory

Big Wal­nut bounced back from two tough road losses to hand Colum­bus Hori­zon Sci­ence Acad­emy a 72–41 non-conference set­back Sat­ur­day night at The Ohio School for The Deaf.

Senior Adam Sha­heen, who led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, ignited a 20-point second-quarter explo­sion with 9 points, includ­ing a pair of threes, to send Big Wal­nut (5–6) into the break with a 32–16 half­time advantage.

Eric Myers’ club came back out and outscored the Hawks 40–25 in the sec­ond half to put the game in the Golden Eagle win column.

Dom Hol­sten, 6-foot-1 fresh­man, came off the bench to back Sha­heen with 9 points. Four Golden Eagles, includ­ing juniors Chase LaVeer, Nick Her­bert and Logan Boyd along with sopho­more Michael Buck­les, fol­lowed Sha­heen and Hol­sten in the scor­ing col­umn with 8 points apiece. The quar­tet com­bined for 20 final-half points.

D. Hill and K. Anduis paced the Hawks with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

NEW ALBANY 73, BIG WALNUT 31 — The Golden Eagles strug­gled from the start, drop­ping Friday’s Ohio Cap­i­tal Con­fer­ence Cap­i­tal Divi­sion clash to the host Eagles in New Albany.

Big Wal­nut (4–6, 1–4 OCC) was outscored in each of the four quar­ters, with host New Albany (8–1, 5–0 OCC) clos­ing the game on a 23–6 run to account for the 42-point win­ning margin.

Adam Sha­heen was the lone Golden Eagle to score more than five points, pour­ing in a team-best 17 in the set­back. Logan Boyd fol­lowed with 5 and Nick Her­bert and Zachary Asher with 3 points apiece.

NEWARK CATHOLIC 60, BIG WALNUT 40 — Jeff Speel­man poured in a game-high 23 points and unbeaten Newark Catholic rolled to a 20-point win over Big Wal­nut in the First Fed­eral Hol­i­day Clas­sic cham­pi­onship game played Sat­ur­day, Decem­ber 28, in Newark.

Bishop Ready (4–4) cap­tured the con­so­la­tion con­test with a 47–28 deci­sion over John­stown (5–4).

Newark Catholic (6–0) raced out to a 22–11 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The Green Wave, who got 10 points from David Meurer, led 32–20 at the break before outscor­ing Big Wal­nut (4–5) 28–20 in the sec­ond half.

Logan Boyd, who joined Chase LaVeer with 2 treys, paced the Golden Eagles with 10 points. Zach Laugh­man fol­lowed with Boyd with 7 points. Adam Sha­heen and LaVeer each fin­ished with 6 points apiece.
