Members of the Big Walnut High School Competition Cheerleading Team won first place during Sunday’s Ohio Capital Conference Capital Competition held at Dublin Jerome High School.
Big Walnut previously won the OCC Cap in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2010, and been division runners-up in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012.
“This year’s competition team has had an impressive run,” said Big Walnut’s Head Cheerleading Coach Sarah Kern-Kildow. “The girls earned a First Place at Pickerington Cheer For A Cure, they were third at Ohio State, State Qualifier for OASSA, First Place at Americheer Open Nationals, and now reclaiming our OCC League Title.”
Kern-Kildow said the Saturday, March 2, Arnold Classic Nationals and OASSA State Competition on Sunday, March 3, are still on the team’s schedule.
“Last year we finished our personal best third in the State for Division 2 Non-Mount,” Kern-Kildow said. “This year we’re focusing on taking the top spot. We have increased our tumbling this year and it’s paying off in the results at our competitions.”
Kern-Kildow said the competition squad has been consistently beating or scoring along side established Division I schools like Hilliard Davidson, Darby, Bradley, Gahanna, the Pickeringtons, Dublins and Westervilles.
“We have an amazing group of young athletes who show a tremendous work ethic, positive attitudes and support one another,” Kern-Kildow said. “This is one of the most talented groups I have ever worked with, and our senior leadership has helped get us this far.”
Members of the Big Walnut High School Competition Cheerleading Team are seniors Journey Ramey, Courtney King, Stephanie Keller and Sela Garand (all four seniors were named OCC All-Stars at the OCC competition); junior Allison Daugherty; sophomores Kennedy Walls and Stephanie Sutton; and freshmen Sydney King, Devin Reardon, Samantha Buxton, Kylie McKenzie and Danielle Herman.
Kern-Kildow’s assistant coaches are Stacey Hamilton and Savannah Brown.
