Eisnnicher advances to state at 170 pounds pounds
News Staff Reports
While Big Walnut and Buckeye Valley didn’t have as much success as the D-I schools did, they combined to produce a pair of OHSAA State Tournament qualifiers during last weekend’s Division II District Tournament at Heath High School.
Big Walnut’s Alex Eisnnicher (31–5), making his second District appearance, led the way with a strong second-place finish closing in the 170-pound division. After pinning a pair of opponents on the first day of action, the junior came back to beat Beaver’s Daniel Lattanzio 11–3 in Saturday’s semifinal before falling to New Philadelphia’s Mark Barrow 8–6 in the final.
Eisnnicher will open against Cuyahoga Falls CVCA junior Tyler Maclellan (38–12) on Mat 4 in Friday’s opening round action. The winner will face the survivor of the match between junior Lane Thomas (38–6) of St. Paris Graham and senior Chris Moore (39–5) from Clyde.
Buckeye Valley’s DaShawn Haynes (42–6), competing at 126 pounds, meanwhile, didn’t take the most direct route to secure his spot in this week’s OHSAA state tournament, but earned it nonetheless.
After dropping his quarterfinal matchup in the 126-pound division, Haynes stormed through the consolation bracket, pinning Carrollton’s Dustin Pape in 3:38 before handling Granville’s Christian Price 9–5 and Jonathan Alder’s Bret Yutzy by a 4–2 margin to earn a spot in the third-place match — a showdown he lost to Indian Creek’s Kyle Moffit.
Haynes opening-round match in the State tourney will be against Toledo Central Catholic sophomore Nate Hagan (28–6) on Mat 8. The survivor will advance to face the winner of the match between Springfield Kenton Ridge junior Elijah Cochran (43–10) and Akron St. Vincent St. Mary senior Mike Rix (34–2).
The OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the Campus of The Ohio State University.
