Mae W. Shafer, 86, of Sunbury passed away Monday morning (Aug. 15, 2011) at her residence.

She was born Jan. 8, 1925 in Groton, Conn., to A.P. Welles and Anna (Gehring) Welles. She was a homemaker and member of the Kilbourne United Methodist Church who also volunteered at Grady Memorial Hospital for 25 years. She enjoyed traveling, her son’s dogs and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her son, Robert of Sunbury; daughter, Mary Jane (Richard) Santos of Delaware; five grandchildren, Joseph, Christopher, Scott, Jeffery and Amy; and two great-grandchildren, Tucker and Rylee Jade.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; son, William Martin Shafer; and a brother, A. William Welles.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the Kilbourne United Methodist Church, 5591 Ohio 521, Kilbourne with the Rev. Sonja Bender officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmound Cemetery.
