Big Walnut came away with one team victory in Saturday’s Wolfpack Wrestling Classic at Worthington Kilbourne High School.
The Golden Eagles, capturing 10 weight classes, six by falls, pinned a 54-22 decision on Columbus Brookhaven.
Scoring decisions by falls for Big Walnut were two seniors, RJ Martin in 3:07 at 138 and senior Austin Carr in 1:31 at 160, and four sophomores, including Nico Grier in 0:35 seconds at 113, Anthony Pisano in 2:56 at 152, Daniel Zitello in 1:13 at 182 and Evan Watkins in 4:43 at 195.
Junior Jack Schnurr (145) joined freshmen teammates Nate Helsley (106) and Matt Halbakken (132) with wins by forfeit.
In a pair of competitive matches, Big Walnut came up short Columbus St. Charles 40-39 and Greenview 48-34. Against eventual classic champion Mason, the Golden Eagles dropped respective 78-3 and 40-28 decisions to the Comets “A” and “B” squads.
For the tournament, the Golden Eagles were led by Grier with two falls and a major decision, Martin with two falls and a decision, and Pisano and Watkins with two falls apiece.
Mason defeated Centerville 37-23 to claim the classic title. Fremont Ross topped Dublin Coffman 46-28 in the third-place match while Pickerington Central secured fifth with a 57-21 decision over the host Wolves. Buckeye Valley took the seventh spot with 45-33 decision over St. Charles while Greenview placed ninth with a 48-30 decision over Mt. Gilead.
Big Walnut was scheduled to compete in a triangular match with host West Jefferson and St. Francis DeSales on Wednesday (December 18). The Golden Eagles’ next mat action will be Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 9 a.m. at the Olentangy Orange Invitational.
