Golden Eagle matmen split with DeSales, West Jefferson

Big Walnut came away with a split in last Tuesday’s (December 17) quadrangular wrestling match with West Jefferson and host St. Francis DeSales.
The Golden Eagles, winning on five mats, pinned a 54-30 loss on the host Stallions while dropping a 45-30 decision to the Roughriders.
In Big Walnut’s victory over DeSales, senior RJ Martin, sophomore Daniel Zitello, sophomore Tyler Hogg, sophomore Nico Grier and freshman Like Starkey scored victories by falls for the Golden Eagles. Martin scored in 1 minute, 43 seconds at 145 pounds, Grier in 1:55 at 113, Zitello in 1:22 at 182, Hogg in 2:27 at 220 and Starkey in 2:18 at 285 pounds.

Senior Austin Carr (160 pounds), junior Michael (170), sophomore Evan Watkins (195) and sophomore Drew Cochran (138) were awarded forfeits for the Golden Eagles.

Carr, Martin and Grier earned victories in the match with the Roughriders. Carr won by a fall in 3:11 at 160, Martin by a fall in 1:43 at 138 and Grier by a fall in 0:29 at 113 and Martin by a fall in 1:43 at 138. Sophomore Wes Landrum (126) and Watkins (195) were awarded forfeits. The 120-pound match was a double forfeit.

Big Walnut returns to action on Saturday, January 4 , at 9 a.m. at the Olentangy Orange Invitational.
