The Golden Eagles had no answer for Zanesville’s Brooke Davy as the sixth-seeded Lady Devils outdistanced Big Walnut 44-29 in a Division I Central District Sectional semifinal matchup last Thursday night (February 20) in the Y-Bridge city.

Davy, a senior making her final appearance in Winland Memorial Gymnasium, led Zanesville (17-5) with 17 points, including 12 of the host’s first 16 as the Lady Devils jumped out to a 16-6 lead en route to a 27-13 halftime advantage.

Big Walnut (14-9), sparked by senior Skylar Fleak who scored the first four points of the third quarter, closed to within 10 of the lead at 27-17, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would come as Zanesville put together a 7-0 run to double its lead to 34-17.

Devyn Bonner joined Davy in double figures with 13 points for Zanesville.

Makenna Hammond and Fleak paced the Big Walnut attack in what turned out to be the final basketball game of their high school careers. Hammond led the Golden Eagles with 9 points while Fleak finished with 8 points.

Zanesville advances to the District semifinals tonight (Thursday, February 27) to take on Dublin Coffman (18-6) at 6 p.m. next Thursday at Hamilton Township High School. The Shamrocks defeated Canal Winchester 72-38 to advance to the District semis.
