Big Walnut jumps coach Mike Ryder enjoyed a busy and equally successful weekend at the Division I Boys & Girls Indoor State Track Championships at the University of Akron.
On the girls side, Ryder coached senior Olivia Small to State titles in both the long jump and triple jump (see related story).
“Olivia grabbed her fourth and fifth Division I State titles which ties her for the most titles in state history for the individual events for girls.” Ryder said. “These accomplishments are a testament to her hard work! The fact that she wasn’t feeling well and still far outdistanced the competition, shows just how strong she really is”
Not only did Ryder coach Olivia to two state titles, he also coached junior Avery Kerns in the high jump and sophomore Anna Mackey in the triple jump.
On the boys side, Ryder coached junior Cole Stark and sophomore Issac Lucas who were making their second straight appearances in the meet.
Stark placed seventh in the triple jump with a career-best effort of 41 feet, 7.5 inches.
“Cole was five inches ahead of the 15th place mark going into the last jump in the preliminaries,” Ryder said. “He ripped a career-best jump by 10 inches and it held through finals to give him a seventh place podium finish. Cole never got nervous before that jump, he made his runway adjustment and just let it fly…!”
Lucas competed in both the long jump and high jump, finishing 16th in both with respective jumps of 6 feet and 19 feet, 2 inches.
Both Stark and Lucas competed in the 2013 DI Indoor State Meet, both qualifying in the high jump.
