Wetzel, King, McKenzie sweep top BW Cheerleader Awards

Sophomore Sydney King, senior Erin Wetzel and sophomore Kylie McKenzie took the spotlight at the Big Walnut Cheerleading Awards Night held Monday, March 17, in the Media Center at the high school.

Golden Eagle cheerleading coach Sarah Kern-Kildow presented the Outstanding Cheerleader Award to King, the coveted Golden Eagle and Team Leadership awards to Wetzel, and the Coaches Award to McKenzie.

Kern-Kildow, assisted by junior varsity coach Kristen Hackenbracht and freshman coach Beth Stimmel, awarded eight varsity letters. The Golden Eagles’ two seniors, Allison Daugherty, second varsity letter, and Wetzel, third varsity letter, as well as their Senior Plaque. Junior Kennedy Walls (third varsity letter) joined five first-year letterwinners in juniors Alison Emmert and Kelsey White along with sophomores King, McKenzie and Hannah Sullivan for recognition.

Junior varsity awards were presented to juniors Maira Daemon-Bordieri and Johanna Pinn; to sophomores Carlee Ambrose, Danielle Herman, Kimberly Pearson, Katie Perry and Devin Reardon; and to freshmen Taylor Grieser and McKenzie Pickrell. Freshman Julie Foreman joined Daemon-Bordieri, Pinn, Grieser and Pickrell in receiving their freshman numerals.

Also receiving special recognition was Big Walnut’s Competition Cheer squad that captured five championships, including the Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division crown, the Ohio State Competition title, the Cheer For A Cure event, the Americheer Grand Championship as well as the Arnold Classic crown.

Member of those squads included Samantha Buxton, Katelyn Conner, Avery Devol, Marisa Hageman, Danielle Herman, Paige Parsley, Stephanie Sutton, Daugherty, Grieser, Reardon, Sullivan, Walls, King and McKenzie. The team was coached by Kern-Kildow, Hackenbracht and Stimmel.

Four members of the Golden Eagles’ cheerleading squad, Buxton, King, McKenzie and Reardon, were recognized with medals as OCC Cheer All-Stars.

Academically, eight cheerleaders were recognized, led by Daugherty who was honored as both an OCC Scholar-Athlete (Senior/3.50 Grade Point Average) and a Big Walnut Scholar/Athlete (Varsity Letter/3.20 GPA).
