Kate Petty did a little of everything Tuesday, pitching a gem while complementing a solid offensive attack with a team-best three hits, as 11th-seeded Big Walnut (17-7) upset sixth-seeded Pickerington Central (20-7) by a 7-run margin in a 9-2 Division I Central District semifinal matchup at Pickerington North High School.
“It wasn’t easy,” Golden Eagle coach Jeff Hatfield said. “They loaded the bases in the last inning, but our leadership really made the difference tonight.
“We are a veteran team,” he continued. “We won some big games this year and let some easy ones slip away, but it all came together tonight. Kate went the distance in the circle, the girls played tremendous defense behind her — we didn’t have an error all game — and everybody hit the ball hard … and we needed it all to beat a very good Pickerington Central team.”
Petty led the way with the three knocks, including two doubles, while Hayley Apple had a pair of hits including a solo homer, Brooke Hatfield chipped in two hits and Jessica Coletta added another in the win.
Next up, Big Walnut will take on 17th-seeded DeSales (15-10) — a 1-0 upset winner over top-seeded Marysville last Tuesday — in Saturday’s final at Pickerington Central. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
