Drummey says School District at levy tipping point

During Monday evening’s Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting, district treasurer Felicia Drummey said district revenue for the current fiscal year is on track to be 2 percent higher than projected

“Income tax is also running well above projections,” Drummey said. “I anticipated a 5 percent income tax increase, it’s running at 8 percent, generating $441,000 more for the year than we anticipated — evidence that the economy is coming back.”

Drummey also noted that district expenditures are on track with projections, and for the fiscal year should be one percent less than projected.

In presenting the May five-year forecast, Drummey said that document is the first measure of the district’s fiscal health – how revenue coming in compares to revenue going out.

Fujii: Relevance makes rigor possible at BWHS

During Monday evening’s Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting, Big Walnut High School Principal Steve Fujii quoted education guru Bill Daggett, who said: Relevance makes rigor possible.

Fujii was speaking about Big Walnut teachers like Alan Frank that take on projects where students create a product or design solution for an outside client that’s used in the real world.

The idea being that students who roll up their sleeves and produce something for a client that will then be used outside of the school engages student’s attention more than if they were creating a pretend solution to a pretend problem that will never see the light of day.

BW Leo Club inducts 12 new members

Leo Clubs are a youth service organization of Lions Clubs International. In June of 2000, former Big Walnut High School teacher Mark Matthews formed the Big Walnut Leo Club. Since then the Big Walnut Leo Club had been one of the high school’s staple extra-curricular activities until budget constraints eliminated most 2010-11 school year club advisor funding.

Big Walnut High School Spanish language teacher and Leo Club advisor Dora Riggs was instrumental in successfully resurrecting the high school’s Leo Club following its full year hiatus. Last school year when the Leo Club was reinstated 32 high school student were inducted into the Big Walnut Leo Club; and last Thursday evening another dozen students were inducted into the school’s Leo Club ranks.

Sunbury, Galena Memorial Day ceremonies on horizon

In 2000 President Bill Clinton issued a formal White House Memorandum asking all Americans to pause and consider the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“Memorial Day represents one day of national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our Nation and its values,” President Clinton wrote. “While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to securing our Nation’s freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day.”

Clinton went on to ask all Americans to come together to recognize how fortunate we are to live in freedom and prosperity and to observe a universal National Moment of Remembrance on each Memorial Day.

“This memorial observance represents a simple and unifying way to commemorate our history and honor the struggle to protect our freedoms,” Clinton said.

On Monday, May 27, the Village of Sunbury will usher in the summer season with its traditional Memorial Day observance, one of the village’s annual anchor events. The day comes complete with a ceremony honoring those who have served in the military services and who fought and died defending freedom both at home and abroad.

Kate Petty no-hits Wildcats; posts 10-2 complete game victory over Cardinals

Freshman Kate Petty had a day that most pitchers only dream about.

Petty threw two complete games, including a first-game no-hitter against Westerville South, in Big Walnut’s 4–0, 10–2 sweep of the Wildcats and Thomas Worthington Saturday in front of the hometown fans Saturday in Sunbury.

Petty was in complete command against South with her first no-hitter, a performance that saw the freshman righthander issue only one base on balls while striking out three. She was supported in the field by an errorless defense.

“Kate was in complete control against a good Westerville South team,” Golden Eagle assistant coach Tim Rioux said. “As a team, we had a really good weekend.”

Big Walnut edges Orange in 6-5 nailbiter

The Golden Eagles took this one down to the wire …

Big Walnut, after watching a 4–2 lead slip away in the top of the seventh inning, rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to stun Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division leader Olentangy Orange in a 6–5 thriller last Wednesday (May 1) in Sunbury.

“Our kids were excited to play throughout the game … they came in ready to play and I think that was evident the way they responded in the bottom of the seventh,” Golden Eagle head coach Chris Holly said. “We made the most of our scoring opportunities with some clutch hitting, we made some big plays in the field behind Cole Harbin who pitched one of his best games of the season … this was a big win for us going into the upcoming postseason.”
