It was another dominant performance by the Golden Eagles’ girls track and field team.

Big Walnut, on the strength of four first-place finishes and two meet records, scored a 20-point margin of victory in winning its ninth Brooke Relays championship in 11 appearances last Saturday in Wellsburg, West Virginia.

MOUNT VERNON — The Big Walnut baseball team’s come-from-behind win over Mount Vernon last Monday (April 22) seemed to be exactly what the Golden Eagles needed.

Three days later, and against the same opponent, the tide had turned considerably.

Mount Vernon starter Jayben Martin held Big Walnut to just three hits and the host Yellow Jackets scored in every inning but one, finishing the day with an 8–1 Ohio Capital Conference Capital victory over the Golden Eagles Thursday at Mount Vernon High School.

Golden Eagles serve up OCC win at Franklin Hgts.

Big Walnut ran its Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division record to 3–1 with a 5–0 decision over host Franklin Heights Monday in Columbus.

The Golden Eagles, 5–7 overall, dominated the singles courts behind the play of Logan Adams, Grant Burks and Isaiah Kolb. Adams was a 6–0, 6–0 winner at first singles, Burks a 6–0, 6–1 winner at second singles and Kolb a 5–1, 6–3 winner at third singles.

At doubles, Jesse Rines and Scott Bailey teamed for a 7–6(5), 7–6(3) decision at No.1 while Cole Davis and Adam Freeburg paired for a 7–6(7), 6–4 victory at No. 2.

Scott leaving BW girls basketball program with 166 victories in 13 seasons

There will be a familiar face missing from the Golden Eagles bench when Big Walnut opens its 2013–14 girls basketball season. Bob Scott, who won 166 games in his 13 seasons at the Golden Eagle helm, announced his decision to leave the program for personal family concerns after meeting with BW Athletic Director Steve Glesenkamp.

Scott’s granddaughter played middle school basketball at Olentangy Orange and with their conflicting schedules he missed more than half of her games. And if she went on to play high school basketball for the Pioneers he would have to coach against her, something he did not want to do.

“I missed better than half of her games this past season, and if I stay in coaching I would continue to have few opportunities to watch her in the future,” Scott said. “When she advances to play at the high school level, I would be forced to coach against her … that’s something I don’t want to do.”

Big Walnut baseball rallies from 5-run deficit to stun Mount Vernon, 10-5

Down, but not out …

For the third straight game, Big Walnut rallied for a come-from-behind victory, the latest came Monday afternoon when the Golden Eagles rallied from an early 5–0 deficit to hand visiting Mount Vernon 10–5 Ohio Capital Conference setback in Sunbury.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to the 5-run lead with three runs in the first inning before tacking on two more in the second against the Golden Eagles’ starting and eventual winning pitcher Cole Harbin.

Big Walnut, coming off a pair of comeback victories over River Valley on Saturday, wasted little time getting back into the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to narrow the gap to 5–3.

With Harbin quieting the Mount Vernon bats, allowing only a single and a base on balls in facing only 16 Yellow Jackets over the final five innings, Big Walnut went to work in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate and tallied seven runs on three hits and five walks to open up a 10–3 lead going into the top of the seventh inning.

Big Walnut (8–5, 2–3 OCC) opened the inning with back-to-back walks by off Mount Vernon starter and loser Alex Arck to Jay Holland and Nick Moser. Following an Arck strikeout, Jeremy Bok laced a single to center scoring Holland. After Kyle Duncan drew a base on balls to load the bases, Matt Tarney dropped down a perfectly-placed squeeze bunt to score Moser and tie the game at 5–5 before Bok raced home on a wild pitch by Yellow Jacket reliever Duke Cunningham for what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Big Walnut sweeps Golden Eagle Relays

Big Walnut’s girls track and field team used a balanced effort to get the results it was looking for Saturday afternoon in Sunbury, placing in 13 of the 14 events to score 92 points on the way to capturing their fifth straight 2013 “Red” Edwards Golden Eagle
Relays championship.
Big Walnut coach Joe Evener said winning the squad’s host event never gets old. “I am just so proud of these girls,” he said. “What a
terrific win for them. They were able to overcome a couple major obstacles and pull out a victory over some very worthy opponents. This is the fifth time in a row we have won the meet, and it seems like every time we do it in a different way.”
Westerville Central was a close second with 81 points while Olentangy smoothed out the top three of the 15-team field with 56.
