PICKERINGTON — In a classic pitching dual, Granville’s Abby Barker out dueled Big Walnut’s Kate Petty in a 1-0 Division II Central District Tournament Semifinal matchup between the fourth-seeded Blue Aces and fifth-seeded Golden Eagles Monday afternoon at Pickerington Central High School.

Granville (21-6) scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to end the standoff between Barker and Petty. With one out, the Blue Aces loaded the bases on a Mala Peterson single down the left field line, a walk on a 3-2 count to Vega Throphilvs and a throwing error on Anna Moorhead’s sacrifice bunt attempt. On Petty’s first pitch to Silvia Simon, Simon dropped a single into short left-center to bring Peterson home with the winning tally.

“It was a tough loss,” Big Walnut head coach Jeff Hatfield said. “Kate pitched a gem, but we could not get anything going against Barker who matched Kate pitch for pitch … it was a tough game to lose.”

Recognized during the reception were the 2012-13 school year recipients of the Roush Honda/Eagle Mentor Award.

Roush Honda/Eagle Mentor Award recipients are selected through a nomination process that began in March of this year. School administrators, staff members and area residents were asked to nominate individuals they believe have made a positive impact in the life of Big Walnut students.

Criteria included involvement, support and communication for the school building and community; impacting the lives of children in a positive manner; and promoting the welfare of children at home, school or community.

A panel of volunteers and staff selected the final honorees.

In 2000 President Bill Clinton issued a formal White House Memorandum asking all Americans to pause and consider the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“Memorial Day represents one day of national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our Nation and its values,” President Clinton wrote. “While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to securing our Nation’s freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day.”

Clinton went on to ask all Americans to come together to recognize how fortunate we are to live in freedom and prosperity and to observe a universal National Moment of Remembrance on each Memorial Day.

“This memorial observance represents a simple and unifying way to commemorate our history and honor the struggle to protect our freedoms,” Clinton said.

On Monday, May 27, the Village of Sunbury will usher in the summer season with its traditional Memorial Day observance, one of the village’s annual anchor events. The day comes complete with a ceremony honoring those who have served in the military services and who fought and died defending freedom both at home and abroad.

When a successful fellowship’s pastor has been active both in the church and the community for many years, it’s difficult to imagine that fellowship and the community with his or her leadership. They’re anchors, they’re rocks, they’re the go-to person parishioners and even many unaffiliated community members seek out when they have a need.

But even pastors, ministers and priests retire and move on to personal pursuits, and that’s what Sunbury United Methodist Church Pastor Brian Smith is doing. He’s retiring after being a Methodist Pastor for the past 36½ years; his last day in the SUMC pulpit will be on June 16 - Father’s Day.

During the April 8 Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting board members accepted the resignation of assistant superintendent Gary Barber, and within a week rumors began floating around the district that Big Walnut High School principal Steve Fujii was leaving. Barber is leaving to take the superintendent’s position at Marion City Schools; Fujii has since confirmed that he will become the Delaware Area Career Center Assistant Superintendent.

Big Walnut Superintendent Steve Mazzi said when both moves became common knowledge folks started asking him what Big Walnut would do without Barber and Fujii, two key players in the school district’s success while navigating uncertain economic waters.

“I don’t get excited about key people leaving the district; I remind myself that with change comes opportunity,” Mazzi said during an interview last week. “To tell you the truth I hate to see either Gary Barber or Steve Fujii go. However I’ve never stood in the way of someone who wanted to grow in his or her career. What I do want to do is assure members of our community that while we’re filling their positions we’re going to seek out people who are going to do great things for us here at Big Walnut.”

After 156 years of serving eastern Delaware County students the Galena Administration Building, formerly the Galena School, will be sold at auction at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3. Auctions go quickly, that’s their nature. Within minutes of calling out for first bids auctioneer Chip Carpenter will say: “Going once, going twice, sold to …” and a piece of Big Walnut area history will pass from public into private hands.

The history of Big Walnut area education goes back even before the Galena Building, even before Galena itself was formally platted as the village of Zoar in 1816. The Gilbert Carpenter family immigrated to the area from Pennsylvania in 1809. Carpenter, the first Methodist clergyman in Delaware County, was a miller by trade who chose to settle in Galena because the drop from the Big Walnut Creek to the Little Walnut Creek made an ideal location for a gristmill.

Two important institutions, even if in a primitive form, always seemed to precede an official platting of a community, churches and schools. Folks arrived in the wilderness and immediately needed a place to worship, and a place to teach children to read, write and do practical mathematics. Often a log structure served both needs.

It didn’t take up much time during Monday evening’s Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting, but it might have been one of the more important items on the agenda. Board members briefly discussed, and then approved, a House Bill 59 Resolution.

House Bill 59 (HB59) is Governor Kasich’s biennial budget that contains a number of items that concern district treasurer Felicia Drummey, district administrators and board of education members. Specifically, HB59 proposes to expand the Educational Choice Scholarship Program through two new programs that will significantly increase the number of publicly-funded vouchers for students to attend private or parochial schools.

“The bottom line is, local dollars will leave the district,” Drummey said. “Last year the state gave us $1,500 per student, but if a student would choose to go to a charter school the state would direct $5,700 to the charter school.”

Sunbury Town Hall has needed a new roof for some time. There have been leaks in Council Chambers, the metal roof is corroded and breaking apart around the perimeter, the painted coating is failing, and nails are pulling out.

Late last year village consulting engineer Wes Hall, CT Consultants, brought in Dan Bonham from his office to inspect the interior and exterior of the roof to determine its exact condition, and the nature of needed repairs when the roof is replaced.

During a February 6 combined Parks Committee and Services Committee meeting Bonham said the roof’s basic structure is sound, but the entire roof itself is in poor condition, is failing, and should be removed to the top of the rafters, including the metal roof, shake shingles and purlins. Bonham also recommended that a standing seam metal roof of either a galvanized metal with a polyvinylidene fluoride coating or copper be installed over full plywood sheathing.

During the January 14 Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting, district assistant superintendent Gary Barber gave an update on the school district’s plans to contract with an outside provider of an anonymous reporting system to conform to the mandates of HB 116, the Jessica Logan Act. HB 116 was named in memory of Jessica Logan, a Cincinnati teenager who committed suicide after being harassed via cyber-bullying.

Under mandates of the Jessica Logan Act, educators are responsible for investigating and prosecuting complaints (including anonymous reports) of cyber-bullying, even if the material was created on the student’s own time, away from school groups and apart from any school-sanctioned activity. This would include emails, postings on Facebook and other social networks.

At that board meeting Barber said the Big Walnut district’s contract with Safe School Helpline would be active within a week; and on Wednesday, January 23, a letter and explanatory video were posted on the district website noting that the 24/7 helpline is now active.

The Rosecrans Headquarters Unit and members of the Big Walnut Area Historical Society have been working diligently over the past several years to raise enough funds to erect a monumental (larger than life) bronze equestrian statue of Civil War Major General William Starke Rosecrans on Sunbury Village Square.

General Rosecrans was born on Rosecrans Road in Kingston Township in 1819. He graduated from West Point, worked in the Corps of Engineers reinforcing ports on the east coast before teaching at West Point.

He left the military and went into private business as a geologist and architect in Cincinnati. When the Civil War broke out, General Rosecrans reported for duty and ended up leading major union armies to victory.

The one and one-third life-size equestrian statue will not only honor an eastern Delaware County hometown hero, it will provide a monumental work of art for Sunbury Square. The statue, cast by Alan Cottrell of Zanesville, will be mounted on a 50,000-pound granite glacial boulder set in place in July of last year.

Political subdivisions statewide begin each year with a reorganization session. During reorganization meetings rules of operation and conduct are adopted, officers are selected, committee appointments made, and a host of other tasks undertaken that will allow the council or board to operate during the year ahead.

Before last Wednesday’s Sunbury Village Council meeting was more than a few minutes old, village solicitor David Brehm reminded council members that before they could proceed with any other business they were required by Ohio Revised Code to adopt council rules.

“You can change them any time you want to,” Brehm said. “But I recommend that you adopt last year’s council rules so you have rules for tonight’s meeting.”

After adopting the existing council rules, council members unanimously selected Len Weatherby to serve as 2013 Village Council President Pro Tem.

Committee assignments will remain unchanged.

During the campaign to allow casino gambling in Ohio one northern Ohio newspaper said Ohio schools would “… hit the jackpot” because of casino revenue; and during the Big Walnut school district’s levy campaign people who opposed the levy were asking district administrators and board of education members what they were going to do with “… all the gambling money.”
