Super Storm Sandy seems to have come and gone. We hear in the news that the federal government has allocated billions of dollars for Sandy relief, and other crises have taken over the headlines. What most folks don’t realize is that many families in areas impacted by the storm are still without homes and living in shelters, with relatives or other temporary accommodations; the lucky ones are moving back home or into new homes.

But many homes were so severely damaged by Sandy that when folks do finally have a stable place to live they have nothing; the storm destroyed everything that they owned. They don’t even have simple kitchen items like a pot to boil pasta in and a plate to serve it on.

But they have not been forgotten. Back in November Deb Bergmann of Condit Presbyterian Church was in New Jersey delivering blankets and books to Sandy survivors when she touched base with Pastor Joe Gratzel of the First Baptist Church of Manasquan. Pastor Joe explained the ongoing need for simple items like Kitchen Recovery Kits that folks need to help jump-start a normal life after the devastating storm.

Bergmann and other Big Walnut area volunteers helped mobilize members of the Presbytery of Scioto Valley to collect Kitchen Recovery Kits that were being dropped off at Condit Presbyterian for delivery to Manasquan, New Jersey, on May 4.

John was an avid runner who trained for, and participated in, Ironman events until his sudden passing. John’s widow Nicci said the race is more than an opportunity to run and raise funds for a local cause; it’s also a day to remember John Scanlan’s commitment to the community he lived in.

Water, it seemed, was everywhere. With it came death and destruction, with streets turned into waterways and fields planted with debris and decay from the Olentangy River. Initial counts were 18 dead-ranging in age from 13 months to 62 years — and 23 houses completely demolished. Not so, says Stephanie Leasure, an Independent Professional American Standard Ballroom Dance Instructor and Adjunct Professor who is affiliated with Diamond Dance & Fitness. Leasure said if someone can walk, he or she could learn to dance.

Leasure began studying ballroom dance in 2004 at Tanya’s School of Dance in Lima, Ohio, because it was an unfulfilled dream of hers. Following a four-year professional internship she moved to Indiana and founded the Greencastle School of Ballroom Dance in Greencastle, halfway between Terre Haute and Indianapolis.

Readers of The Sunbury News are familiar with Scott Belcastro and his firm Trebel, LLC. Belcastro is the energy broker who recently was signed on as the Village of Sunbury energy broker, and guided the village through the process of writing ordinances that establishes rules of governance for Sunbury’s opt-out residential and small business electricity and natural gas aggregation programs.

After Sunbury’s residential electricity aggregation application is approved by the Public Utilities of Ohio, Sunbury residents who do not opt-out of the program will see a guaranteed 15 percent savings on the generation and transmission portion of their American Electric Power bills beginning in March or April; small business savings will be a guaranteed 10 percent.

Sunbury Village Council members negotiated a 12-month contract with Border Energy. Border Energy’s residential early termination fee will be $50. Electric bills would still come from AEP; and because AEP would still deliver electricity locally, it would continue to be the point of contact for service.
