Each school year, in front of an audience of family, friends and school district staff members, Big Walnut High School students hold an impressive National Honor Society Induction Ceremony; and even more impressive were the numbers of new Big Walnut juniors and seniors inducted during this years Thursday, May 9, NHS Induction Ceremony — 58 new members were added to Big Walnut’s NHS chapter.

During his remarks Big walnut High School Principal Steve Fujii challenged the inductees to participate in mankind’s next leap forward.

“Your achievements in the realms of Scholarship, Leadership, Community Service and Character are being honored here tonight by your induction into this prestigious society,” Fujii said. “An honor such as this is a wonderful way for the school and community to recognize and celebrate the choices, and sometimes the sacrifices, you have made.

“But I believe that what should make you and your parents the most proud is not the actual honor itself, but what you had to do to get it,” Fujii added. “As Ralph Waldo Emerson said ‘The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.’ Any recognition is just the icing on the cake, not to be expected but definitely to be enjoyed … tonight’s induction is the reward of several things done well. Your character makes me believe you are capable of the second great leap for mankind.”

The Oscars? Who needs the stinking Oscars when Big Walnut High School has its very own 2013 Drama Awards, complete with a banquet and costumes ranging from haut couture (really, really nice), to flamboyant (really, really strange), to casual (hey, we got here after the game, right)?

And, as an added benefit, Big Walnut’s drama enthusiasts are a wholesome crowd who enjoy their craft, not like Hollywood’s playboys and playgirls who are in it for the money and who seem to be in the news more often for unsavory behavior than Oscar-winning performances.

Last Thursday evening, Big Walnut High School Drama Coach Erin Gibbons, members of the high school’s 2012-13 drama season casts and crews, parents and friends, gathered at the high school cafeteria for a pot-luck banquet, followed by an awards ceremony in the auditorium.

Sabrina Fitch, a fourth-grade student at General Rosecrans Elementary School, was honored as the Big Walnut School Board Student of the Month for June at Monday’s Board Meeting.

Sabrina, the daughter of Theresa McCarty and Michael Fitch, is in Ms. Katie Pharazyn’s fourth-grade classroom where she enjoyed Health, Science and Social Studies classes this year. While she doesn’t always enjoy reading due to her dyslexia, she has made so much progress with the direction of the reading intervention staff at GRE, including Ms. Amy Keep, Ms. Katie Cochran and Ms. Pharazyn.

Sabrina is in her second year of 4-H and will be showing her pet rabbits at the Delaware County Fair this year. She loves music and singing and has signed up for GRE’s Fifth Grade Choir. Art has been a passion of hers since Kindergarten and she has blossomed over the years at GRE and with outside instruction from Kidz Love Art Studio.

General Rosecrans Elementary School PTO President Liana Lee said the GRE McTeacher Night held Thursday, April 25, at the Sunbury McDonald’s Restaurant was a huge success. Lee said GRE teachers and staff raised almost $500 in tips alone; and more than $800 was raised during the evening when the school’s share of cash register receipts were factored in.

“I don’t know how many families attended, but I do know that we had a great crowd,” Lee said. “Families were lined up at the counter before 5:15 and they kept coming until well after McTeacher Night ended at 7:30. At one point, the drive-thru line circled the building and we had a line of 25 people out the door. It was wonderful to see such great support from our GRE families.”

Big Walnut High School’s Junior-Senior Prom is this Saturday, May 11, at Villa Milano in Westerville; and high school students everywhere always go through the uneasy process of asking a significant other, a casual friend, or even a stranger to be their special prom date.

Big Walnut students are no different, though this year there have been a few twists in asking that big prom date question. There was a prom date request spray-painted on the Spirit Column outside the high school’s north entry, and candle-lit luminaria on the stadium bleachers spelled out “PROM?” during an after-dark walk around the high school track.

But junior Chris Thomas took home this year’s prom question prize when he asked Stephanie Adkins to be his prom date.

This year’s Big Walnut/DACC Annual FFA Banquet, with an “It’s a Jungle Out There” theme, opened with an Autumn Lakes catered meal in the Big Walnut High School Cafeteria before those in attendance retired to the high school auditorium to get down to the business of the evening – annual recognitions and awards, and out with the old and in with the new.

Some of the out with the old and in with the new was a partial reshuffling of the deck as several members of the 2012-13 FFA officer team will hold positions during the 2013-14 school year.

Serving as program emcees were this year’s officers: President Stephanie Little, Vice President Maggie Lacy, Secretary Kristen Hill, Treasurer Shane Hanly, Sentinel Katelynn Cheadle, Student Advisor Kaitlyn Headlee and Reporter Sarah Nelson.

Tapped for next year’s officer duties are President Katelynn Cheadle, Vice President Shane Hanly, Secretary Kristen Hill, Treasurer Evan Thiergartner, Sentinel Austin Hale, Student Advisor Trey Howard, Reporter Kaitlyn Headlee and Assistant Officer Bradyn Dronsfield.

There are careers in food science, agronomy, animal science, natural resources, forestry, economics, mechanics and engineering, worldwide food production, and dozens of other career field choices. And it’s a growing field. By the year 2050 the world’s population will require 100 percent more food than the planet produces today; and 70 percent of this food must come from efficiency improving technology.

In fact, give elementary age students roller skates almost any day of the week, any time of the day and they will put them on and skate until they are exhausted.

But what if there’s no party at the skate club? Skating is still a healthy activity, right? Wouldn’t it be an ideal activity to put children in skates during school hours while in Physical Education class?

That’s what General Rosecrans Elementary School Physical Education teacher Jody Greiger has done, thanks to financial and volunteer help from the GRE Parent Teacher Organization.

“It is my favorite thing,” Erin said of reading. She’s taking an advanced placement literature course at Big Walnut High School, and among her assignments was reading George Orwell’s 1984.

“We had a month or two to read the whole thing, and I did it in four or five weeks because I got sucked into it. I had to have my friends take my book, so I wouldn’t get too far ahead,” Erin said. She also praised My Supplier, the debut novel of fellow student Sarah Stefaniak.

“Erin stands out as an individual,” said Mike Ruark, her literature teacher. “She does things independently, and it’s a pleasure to see a student who’s confident in what she’s doing. She’s a pleasure to have in class, and an all-around great student and hard worker.”

If you are a Big Walnut High School junior or senior (girl, of course) you’re looking for a prom dress; and if you graduated anytime during the past few years you’ve probably got a prom dress hanging in a closet waiting to go out of style, then hopefully come back in fashion someday as a retro-style.

But the problem is, how do you put the two together — the need for a prom dress, and the need to recycle last year’s (or the year before last year’s, or the year’s before that) prom or party dress?

That was not a problem for Big Walnut High School students in Mary Jane Carr’s English Class.
Spring is here. The weather is getting warmer (we hope); flowers will soon bloom; trees will bud and blossom … and Big Walnut High School seniors will be going online, scrambling for last-minute scholarship funds to help pay for next year’s trip to college.

What many of them may not know, is that there’s a source of scholarship funds they can apply for by simply stopping at the high school guidance office; and those funds are the result of the generous efforts of members of their own community.

Any Big Walnut senior or Big Walnut graduate currently enrolled in a college or university is eligible to apply for one of the many scholarships administered by the Big Walnut Education Foundation.

Faulkner said her teams have completed a month of four different competitions where they placed First nine times, plus other individual First Place awards, and have received two High Point awards, and a Spirit Award.
In addition, the NorthStar Junior Level 2 Team took Grand Champion, placing First out of 43 teams at the recent Ohio State University 2013 Cheerleading & Dance Team Competition.

“The U.S. Finals standings for the month of January have been released and our Junior Team was ranked number 22 in the nation among all Level 2 teams,” Faulkner said. “This is a huge accomplishment and something to be very proud of. “I’ve been in high school too long. It’s the same routine over and over again. I like change,” she said.

Abigail has attended the school district since kindergarten living in the same house.

“I feel like living here my whole life, I’m ready to get out,” she said, adding that while she will definitely miss home and the area, “I’m ready to start something new.”

New for Abigail will be studying to become a biomedical engineer. She has applied to seven schools and not decided yet where to attend, but her top two choices are Case Western Reserve University and Vanderbilt University.

There is a possibility that she may go on to medical school.

“It depends on whether I am tired of school or want to go on,” she said. “I’ll see where everything takes me in the future.”

Abigail said that as a biomedical engineer, she can conduct research or make medical machines. If she goes on to medical school, she is interested in dermatology.

There’s a marker in Kingston Township recognizing the general’s birthplace, and the Big Walnut Local School District named its new elementary building after the general – General Rosecrans Elementary School, a.k.a. GRE.

Everyone’s also familiar with the effort to erect a bronze equestrian statue of General Rosecrans on historic Sunbury Village Square. Fundraising has been underway for the past two years, there have been major contributors and modest donations along the way to reaching a goal in excess of the $175,000 needed to finish the sculpture, cast the bronze, and have it finished and installed for a September 28 dedication ceremony.

The money is mostly in place, with only a few thousand dollars needed to complete the project; and statue committee members decided what better way to give children in the community ownership of the new landmark sculpture honoring one of their own than ask them to help finish raising the money.

To accomplish that task, on January 7 Big Walnut schools began a Lincolns for Rosecrans fundraising project that will end on February 12, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

Zack Moore wants area residents to help contribute to a good cause — by eating pizza. And anyone who has parked at Sunbury United Methodist Church (SUMC) to attend a funeral at Sunbury Memorial Park, or to attend an event on Sunbury Village Square, will know what that good cause is.

Between SUMC and the Village center pedestrians on the north side of West Cherry Street have to walk out on the edge of the roadway before they can access the sidewalk in front of the cemetery.

As an Eagle Scout project Moore plans to build an engineered 40-foot long by 10-foot wide foot bridge over Prairie Run Creek that will connect the Methodist Church parking lot with the sidewalk in front of the cemetery.

Goooooood Morning Big Walnut!

This is how students are greeted on the morning announcements at Big Walnut High School. Most students know that this cheerful and kind greeting every morning is from Miss Hannah Griffith. Students who do not know that the voice is Hannah’s are still uplifted.

Hannah Griffith, a junior at Big Walnut High School, was recognized as the Big Walnut Board of Education’s Student-Citizen of the Month at Monday’s board meeting. She is the daughter of Lori and Scott Griffith. She is also the “little sister” to Jason Griffith, a BWHS graduate from the class of 2011, and the older sister of Haley Griffith at Big Walnut Middle School. And for everyone who has been around the high school for a length of time, Hannah is also the granddaughter of Ray and Karen Dusenbury.
