BW’s Malik, Watkins attend Distinguished Young Women Program

The Dis­tin­guished Young Women Schol­ar­ship Pro­gram will be held on Feb­ru­ary 22 and 23 in Mount Vernon.

Twenty-three Ohio high school senior girls will arrive in Mount Ver­non on Sat­ur­day, Feb­ru­ary 16, for a wel­com­ing cer­e­mony that kicks off a week filled with rehearsals, lun­cheons with var­i­ous ser­vice orga­ni­za­tions, and numer­ous speak­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties; and rep­re­sent­ing Delaware County will be Big Wal­nut High School seniors Ali Malik and Kee­ley Watkins.

BWMS get energy curriculum boost from OEP

Thanks to the Ohio Energy Project Big Wal­nut Mid­dle School stu­dents are learn­ing to become wise con­sumers of energy while at the same time help­ing their fam­i­lies save money by reduc­ing energy waste at home today.

Since the Ohio Energy Project began in 1984 it has been pro­vid­ing com­plete, objec­tive and com­pre­hen­sive infor­ma­tion on sources and forms of energy, energy effi­ciency and con­ser­va­tion, and the eco­nomic and envi­ron­men­tal impact of energy use. AEP Ohio has part­nered with the Ohio Energy Project to offer the e3smart℠ Pro­gram since 2007, and local energy provider Colum­bia Gas came on board in 2012.

BW Science Fair ‘13 tonight at BWHS

The Big Wal­nut Local School Dis­trict Sci­ence Fair, an event that involves stu­dents from fifth grade through high school, is tonight (Thurs­day, Feb­ru­ary 14) at Big Wal­nut High School.

Big Wal­nut High School sci­ence teacher Matt Wallschlaeger said Big Wal­nut is one of few school dis­tricts in the state that has had a con­tin­u­ous sci­ence fair for the past 50-plus years; and this year’s sci­ence fair will host 112 projects, with a strong fifth grade par­tic­i­pa­tion by inter­me­di­ate school students.

BW Drama presents Guys and Dolls

Big Wal­nut High School’s pro­duc­tion of the musi­cal Guys and Dolls is cur­rently in rehearsal and on its way to becom­ing a local hit. With actors Josh Schirtzinger as Sky Mas­ter­son, Alli­son Daw­son as Sarah Brown, Thomas Hamann play­ing Nathan Detroit and Olivia Beck­ett as the lovely Ade­laide, the show is bound to bring the late 1940’s and early 50’s swing­ing back to Sun­bury with style.

The clas­sic show, writ­ten by Frank Loesser and based on Abe Bur­rows’ and Joe Swerling’s book The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, is the tale of New York’s gam­bling under­world and an unex­pected love encounter between an uptight Sal­va­tion Army woman and one of the most noto­ri­ous gam­blers of the era.

BW Mock Trial Team win trials, qualify to Regional competition

The Big Wal­nut Mock Trial com­peted in the OCLRE Mock Trial Dis­trict com­pe­ti­tion held Fri­day (Feb. 1) in Delaware.

The Big Wal­nut team won both tri­als they com­peted in. In doing so, they qual­i­fied for the Regional Com­pe­ti­tion on Feb­ru­ary 22.

Five BWMS Art students earn honors at Regional competition

Five Big Wal­nut Mid­dle School stu­dents of mid­dle school art teacher Nancy Craw­ford recently dis­tin­guished them­selves with per­sonal best works entered in the Alliance for Young Artists & Writ­ers Scholas­tic Art & Writ­ing Awards competition.

Big Wal­nut Mid­dle School’s Caleb Odell received a Sil­ver Key in the regional com­pe­ti­tion; and William Bell, Car­o­line Craig-Bowden, Nate Hel­s­ley and Nicholas Smoke were awarded Hon­or­able Mentions.

Parker Novak, BWIS fifth-grader, wins Dispatch writing contest

Big Wal­nut Inter­me­di­ate School fifth-grade stu­dent Parker Novak recently found out that she was selected as one of the win­ners in a Colum­bus Dis­patch Hal­loween writ­ing contest.

The con­test was held in con­junc­tion with Mar­garet Peter­son Had­dix, author of numer­ous books for chil­dren, teens and young adults.

In the con­test, Had­dix wrote the begin­ning of a story about a super­hero that drops off mid-sentence: “Because the minute I put on that shirt, I …” and con­test entrants had to com­plete the story.

Annual Big Walnut Science Fair just around the corner on February 14

On Thurs­day, Feb­ru­ary 14, the Big Wal­nut Local School Dis­trict will hold an event that’s becom­ing rare in Cen­tral Ohio, if not the entire state. That event involves stu­dents from fifth grade through high school, encour­ag­ing them to think log­i­cally and cre­atively using the sci­en­tific method of inquiry, and sup­ports the district’s cur­ricu­lum goals across all grade levels.

What event is it? It’s the Big Wal­nut Sci­ence Fair.
