The Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program will be held on February 22 and 23 in Mount Vernon.
Twenty-three Ohio high school senior girls will arrive in Mount Vernon on Saturday, February 16, for a welcoming ceremony that kicks off a week filled with rehearsals, luncheons with various service organizations, and numerous speaking opportunities; and representing Delaware County will be Big Walnut High School seniors Ali Malik and Keeley Watkins.

Thanks to the Ohio Energy Project Big Walnut Middle School students are learning to become wise consumers of energy while at the same time helping their families save money by reducing energy waste at home today.
Since the Ohio Energy Project began in 1984 it has been providing complete, objective and comprehensive information on sources and forms of energy, energy efficiency and conservation, and the economic and environmental impact of energy use. AEP Ohio has partnered with the Ohio Energy Project to offer the e3smart℠ Program since 2007, and local energy provider Columbia Gas came on board in 2012.

The Big Walnut Local School District Science Fair, an event that involves students from fifth grade through high school, is tonight (Thursday, February 14) at Big Walnut High School.
Big Walnut High School science teacher Matt Wallschlaeger said Big Walnut is one of few school districts in the state that has had a continuous science fair for the past 50-plus years; and this year’s science fair will host 112 projects, with a strong fifth grade participation by intermediate school students.

Big Walnut High School’s production of the musical Guys and Dolls is currently in rehearsal and on its way to becoming a local hit. With actors Josh Schirtzinger as Sky Masterson, Allison Dawson as Sarah Brown, Thomas Hamann playing Nathan Detroit and Olivia Beckett as the lovely Adelaide, the show is bound to bring the late 1940’s and early 50’s swinging back to Sunbury with style.
The classic show, written by Frank Loesser and based on Abe Burrows’ and Joe Swerling’s book The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, is the tale of New York’s gambling underworld and an unexpected love encounter between an uptight Salvation Army woman and one of the most notorious gamblers of the era.

The Big Walnut Mock Trial competed in the OCLRE Mock Trial District competition held Friday (Feb. 1) in Delaware.
The Big Walnut team won both trials they competed in. In doing so, they qualified for the Regional Competition on February 22.

Five Big Walnut Middle School students of middle school art teacher Nancy Crawford recently distinguished themselves with personal best works entered in the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.
Big Walnut Middle School’s Caleb Odell received a Silver Key in the regional competition; and William Bell, Caroline Craig-Bowden, Nate Helsley and Nicholas Smoke were awarded Honorable Mentions.

Big Walnut Intermediate School fifth-grade student Parker Novak recently found out that she was selected as one of the winners in a Columbus Dispatch Halloween writing contest.
The contest was held in conjunction with Margaret Peterson Haddix, author of numerous books for children, teens and young adults.
In the contest, Haddix wrote the beginning of a story about a superhero that drops off mid-sentence: “Because the minute I put on that shirt, I …” and contest entrants had to complete the story.

On Thursday, February 14, the Big Walnut Local School District will hold an event that’s becoming rare in Central Ohio, if not the entire state. That event involves students from fifth grade through high school, encouraging them to think logically and creatively using the scientific method of inquiry, and supports the district’s curriculum goals across all grade levels.
