PICKERINGTON — In a classic pitching dual, Granville’s Abby Barker out dueled Big Walnut’s Kate Petty in a 1-0 Division II Central District Tournament Semifinal matchup between the fourth-seeded Blue Aces and fifth-seeded Golden Eagles Monday afternoon at Pickerington Central High School.

Granville (21-6) scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to end the standoff between Barker and Petty. With one out, the Blue Aces loaded the bases on a Mala Peterson single down the left field line, a walk on a 3-2 count to Vega Throphilvs and a throwing error on Anna Moorhead’s sacrifice bunt attempt. On Petty’s first pitch to Silvia Simon, Simon dropped a single into short left-center to bring Peterson home with the winning tally.

“It was a tough loss,” Big Walnut head coach Jeff Hatfield said. “Kate pitched a gem, but we could not get anything going against Barker who matched Kate pitch for pitch … it was a tough game to lose.”

Each school year, in front of an audience of family, friends and school district staff members, Big Walnut High School students hold an impressive National Honor Society Induction Ceremony; and even more impressive were the numbers of new Big Walnut juniors and seniors inducted during this years Thursday, May 9, NHS Induction Ceremony — 58 new members were added to Big Walnut’s NHS chapter.

During his remarks Big walnut High School Principal Steve Fujii challenged the inductees to participate in mankind’s next leap forward.

“Your achievements in the realms of Scholarship, Leadership, Community Service and Character are being honored here tonight by your induction into this prestigious society,” Fujii said. “An honor such as this is a wonderful way for the school and community to recognize and celebrate the choices, and sometimes the sacrifices, you have made.

“But I believe that what should make you and your parents the most proud is not the actual honor itself, but what you had to do to get it,” Fujii added. “As Ralph Waldo Emerson said ‘The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.’ Any recognition is just the icing on the cake, not to be expected but definitely to be enjoyed … tonight’s induction is the reward of several things done well. Your character makes me believe you are capable of the second great leap for mankind.”

Who needs the stinking Oscars when Big Walnut High School has its very own 2013 Drama Awards, complete with a banquet and costumes ranging from haut couture (really, really nice), to flamboyant (really, really strange), to casual (hey, we got here after the game, right)?

And, as an added benefit, Big Walnut’s drama enthusiasts are a wholesome crowd who enjoy their craft, not like Hollywood’s playboys and playgirls who are in it for the money and who seem to be in the news more often for unsavory behavior than Oscar-winning performances.

Last Thursday evening, Big Walnut High School Drama Coach Erin Gibbons, members of the high school’s 2012-13 drama season casts and crews, parents and friends, gathered at the high school cafeteria for a pot-luck banquet, followed by an awards ceremony in the auditorium.

As we prepare to enter a new millennium, it’s interesting to look back and see what life was like in Kingston Township 200 years ago. According to the History of Delaware County and Ohio, 1880, the Kingston Township “… inhabitants are likewise noted for their morality, industry and hospitality.” They immigrated to Kingston Township in the early 1800s from Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Vermont and Virginia.

The land in the area was given by Congress to Revolutionary War soldiers as payment for their services. But, it seemed to be a good idea gone bad. The land was issued in warrants for 100 acres, but could only be located in 4,000 acre tracts. Most soldiers were poor and sold their warrants to speculators or turned it over to their landlords or tavern keepers to pay their bar bills.

Five innings, no hits, 15 strikeouts …

Fifth-seeded Big Walnut (17-8) opened the 2013 Division II Central District Tournament Monday afternoon with a 16-0 perfect game victory over visiting Columbus South (5-15) in Sectional play at Sunbury.

Freshman Kate Petty, senior Ali Walker and freshman Rachel Brown combined to retire all 15 Bulldog batters they faced on strikeouts, 8 on called third strikes and 7 on swinging third strikes. Petty started and worked the first two innings, striking out six. Walker came on in relief in the third and fanned the next six South batters. Brown, called up from the Golden Eagles JV roster, retired all three batters she faced as she struck out three on just 10 pitches.

Any Big Walnut High School student involved in athletics understands the importance between being an Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I team and an OHSAA Division II team.

If Big Walnut’s student population lands a team in Division I, Big Walnut is typically one of the smallest schools in the division. Being a smaller school means less of a talent pool, and less talent means the school is unlikely to advance very deep in postseason tournament play, let alone have a realistic chance of winning a state title.

Exacerbating the problem is the ongoing controversy about private, parochial and open-enrollment schools located within a public school district that draws talent from a geographic area larger than that public school district, and yet their student populations keep them in lower divisions – which they then tend to dominate on the playing field, court and track.

Super Storm Sandy seems to have come and gone. We hear in the news that the federal government has allocated billions of dollars for Sandy relief, and other crises have taken over the headlines. What most folks don’t realize is that many families in areas impacted by the storm are still without homes and living in shelters, with relatives or other temporary accommodations; the lucky ones are moving back home or into new homes.

But many homes were so severely damaged by Sandy that when folks do finally have a stable place to live they have nothing; the storm destroyed everything that they owned. They don’t even have simple kitchen items like a pot to boil pasta in and a plate to serve it on.

But they have not been forgotten. Back in November Deb Bergmann of Condit Presbyterian Church was in New Jersey delivering blankets and books to Sandy survivors when she touched base with Pastor Joe Gratzel of the First Baptist Church of Manasquan. Pastor Joe explained the ongoing need for simple items like Kitchen Recovery Kits that folks need to help jump-start a normal life after the devastating storm.

Bergmann and other Big Walnut area volunteers helped mobilize members of the Presbytery of Scioto Valley to collect Kitchen Recovery Kits that were being dropped off at Condit Presbyterian for delivery to Manasquan, New Jersey, on May 4.

“Income tax is also running well above projections,” Drummey said. “I anticipated a 5 percent income tax increase, it’s running at 8 percent, generating $441,000 more for the year than we anticipated - evidence that the economy is coming back.”

Drummey also noted that district expenditures are on track with projections, and for the fiscal year should be one percent less than projected.

In presenting the May five-year forecast, Drummey said that document is the first measure of the district’s fiscal health – how revenue coming in compares to revenue going out.

The idea being that students who roll up their sleeves and produce something for a client that will then be used outside of the school engages student’s attention more than if they were creating a pretend solution to a pretend problem that will never see the light of day.

In 2000 President Bill Clinton issued a formal White House Memorandum asking all Americans to pause and consider the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“Memorial Day represents one day of national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our Nation and its values,” President Clinton wrote. “While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to securing our Nation’s freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day.”

Clinton went on to ask all Americans to come together to recognize how fortunate we are to live in freedom and prosperity and to observe a universal National Moment of Remembrance on each Memorial Day.

“This memorial observance represents a simple and unifying way to commemorate our history and honor the struggle to protect our freedoms,” Clinton said.

On Monday, May 27, the Village of Sunbury will usher in the summer season with its traditional Memorial Day observance, one of the village’s annual anchor events. The day comes complete with a ceremony honoring those who have served in the military services and who fought and died defending freedom both at home and abroad.

Petty was in complete command against South with her first no-hitter, a performance that saw the freshman righthander issue only one base on balls while striking out three. She was supported in the field by an errorless defense.

“I don’t know how many families attended, but I do know that we had a great crowd,” Lee said. “Families were lined up at the counter before 5:15 and they kept coming until well after McTeacher Night ended at 7:30. At one point, the drive-thru line circled the building and we had a line of 25 people out the door. It was wonderful to see such great support from our GRE families.”

Big Walnut High School’s Junior-Senior Prom is this Saturday, May 11, at Villa Milano in Westerville; and high school students everywhere always go through the uneasy process of asking a significant other, a casual friend, or even a stranger to be their special prom date.

Big Walnut students are no different, though this year there have been a few twists in asking that big prom date question. There was a prom date request spray-painted on the Spirit Column outside the high school’s north entry, and candle-lit luminaria on the stadium bleachers spelled out “PROM?” during an after-dark walk around the high school track.

But junior Chris Thomas took home this year’s prom question prize when he asked Stephanie Adkins to be his prom date.

John was an avid runner who trained for, and participated in, Ironman events until his sudden passing. John’s widow Nicci said the race is more than an opportunity to run and raise funds for a local cause; it’s also a day to remember John Scanlan’s commitment to the community he lived in.

Hall said the bid opening to determine the lowest and best bid would be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, May 24.

Sunbury Town Hall has needed a new roof for some time. There have been leaks in council chambers, the metal roof is corroded and breaking apart around the perimeter, the painted coating is failing, and nails are pulling out.

Late last year Hall brought in Dan Bonham from his office to inspect the interior and exterior of the roof to determine its exact condition, and the nature of needed repairs when the roof is replaced.

The Village of Sunbury recently held its annual Arbor Day celebration as part of the community’s requirements for maintaining Tree City USA status with the Arbor Day Foundation.

Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Tree City USA is a large and growing fraternity of 3,400 communities; over 135 million people live in a Tree City USA community.

Sunbury attained Tree City USA status five years ago and each year as part of its Tree City USA requirement held a brief tree planting ceremony. This year members of the Village of Sunbury Tree & Landscape Commission decided to place tree identification markers next to 20 pre-selected trees on village square in lieu of tree planting as an Arbor Day requirement.

When a successful fellowship’s pastor has been active both in the church and the community for many years, it’s difficult to imagine that fellowship and the community with his or her leadership. They’re anchors, they’re rocks, they’re the go-to person parishioners and even many unaffiliated community members seek out when they have a need.

But even pastors, ministers and priests retire and move on to personal pursuits, and that’s what Sunbury United Methodist Church Pastor Brian Smith is doing. He’s retiring after being a Methodist Pastor for the past 36½ years; his last day in the SUMC pulpit will be on June 16 - Father’s Day.
