Four years ago Teresa Dronsfield gained approval from Sunbury Village Council to hold a late August food and music festival called Sunbury Sizzle & Sounds on Sunbury Village Square.
Unbeknownst to Dronsfield, then owner of Mudflats Bar & Grill, Jane White had received a nod of approval from Galena council for the Greater Galena Civic Association to hold Galena Summerfest on the same date.
It could have been a scheduling disaster, until Dronsfield and White put their heads together, joined the two festivals via a shuttle bus.
What began as an accident turned into a Big Walnut area end of summer staple.
Affectionately known as Dos Festivals, Sunbury Sizzle & Sounds and Galena Summerfest drew better than expected crowds – estimated over 8,000 at each festival last summer – and both festivals will return this year from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on August 23.
Leadership has changed. White sold Mudflats and is less involved in Galena Civic Association events; a committee chaired by Nancy Murphy of HER Realtors Murphy & Associates is organizing Summerfest.
Sizzle & Sounds, now under the Big Walnut Civic Association umbrella, is co-chaired by Dronsfield, owner of the Giant Lemonade Cup concession, and Cindy Erndt, a member of the Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Both festivals still come complete with live on-stage entertainment, plenty of food vendors and a host of activities suitable for children and teenagers; both festivals also include outdoor beer gardens: Galena throughout the entire festival day, Sunbury throughout the evening hours.
Dronsfield said she’s especially excited with this fourth resurrection of the twin festivals because of the involvement of Erndt and other members of the newly minted Big Walnut Civic Association.
“We’re nearing the end of summer, and it’s a great time for festivals,” Dronsfield said. “And, for a near perfect end to the summer Big Walnut area, residents can attend two festivals in one, hear great music, have plenty of food on hand and socialize with their neighbors. Best of all both festivals will be connected by a free shuttle service – park once and visit both festivals.”
Sunbury Sizzle & Sound’s music lineup includes Big Walnut High School’s 15 Minutes of Fame winners, McGuffey Lane, SouthWynd, Shucking Bubba Deluxe, and Bad Medicine; Galena Summerfest will feature Jimi & The Coolers, Pett Crow, Mark May Band & The Soul Satyr Horns and the Lionel Young Band.
