The Alzheimer’s Association, Central Ohio Chapter, is planning another Delaware walk in October.

The 2013 Delaware Walk to End Alzheimer’s raised $40,000, said Special Events and Marketing Manager Jennifer Monroe-Sega. This year, the walk will return to downtown Delaware and Ohio Wesleyan University Oct. 26 with a $40,000 goal and a new route looping around downtown, Monroe-Sega said.

“It’s an every person event,” she said. “We have patients that come, people in wheelchairs, parents with wheelchairs, so it’s a very family-friendly environment.”

The walk — which varies in length from one to three miles, depending on the walker — begins with an opening ceremony planned for Selby Field and includes entertainment and children’s activities.

Funds raised by the Delaware walk and other Alzheimer’s Association walks support the 24/7 Helpline, 1-800-272-3900, and fund support groups and support materials for caregivers; early stage services; education and educational materials about Alzheimer’s and other dementia topics; MedicAlert and Safe Return wandering response systems; care consultations with the Alzheimer’s Association; local and national advocacy; and healthcare professional training.

The Central Ohio Chapter began its fundraising walk 25 years ago in Columbus, then created a combine walk for Delaware and Marion Counties. Both counties eventually drew enough support to have their own walk.
