This year’s Sept. 28 Big Nut Strut might be more than a month out, but race organizers recently announced that early reservations are underway at Columbus Running Company.

The Big Nut Strut is a 5K (3.1 mile) family-friendly run/walk that benefits district elementary school PTO’s, helping them pay for activities that fall outside normal curriculum funding.

This year’s race will be managed by Columbus Running Company, with all online registrations. Paper registrations will only be accepted on race day and during early packet pickup from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 at Sunbury Chiropractic Center, 123 S.R. 3 in Sunbury Mills Plaza.

The adult early registration fee is $25 until Sept. 13 and $30 from Sept. 14 to race day; age 12 and under early registration fee is $15 until Sept. 13 and $20 from Sept. 14 to race day.

The Kid’s Fun Run of previous years has been replaced with a 1.35-Mile Family Walk. Each family member will have to register individually for the family walk.

Big Nut Strut’s home base will be the General Rosecrans Elementary School staff parking lot accessed off of Fairland Drive. Race participants will not use any main roadways other than a brief stretch of Fairland Drive.

All participants will receive a technical short sleeve race shirt and finish line refreshments. You must pre-register by Sept. 12 to be guaranteed a shirt on race day. Big Nut Strut is also giving participants the opportunity to get their name or a fun nickname on their bib number, but they must pre-register by Sept. 12 to get their name on a bib.

Awards will be given to the top male and female in 14 age groups from 6 and under through 60-plus.

Registration begins at General Rosecrans Elementary School at 10 a.m. on race day; the 5K run/walk and 1.35-mile walk begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 1:30 awards ceremony.

Race organizers said they are seeking donations, sponsors and race day volunteers. For information about becoming a Big Nut Strut sponsor or to volunteer email Christine Anastasio (Myerholtz) at christinemfit@gmail.com or call 740-358-2569.

The 5th Annual Big Nut Strut proceeds will benefit Big Walnut Elementary, General Rosecrans Elementary, Harrison Street Elementary and Hylen Souders Elementary schools.
