Former undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion James “Buster” Douglas is no stranger to Central Ohio sports fans. Douglas is a Columbus native who attended Linden McKinley High School where he played football and basketball, and was a leading player on Linden’s 1977 AAA state championship team.

Douglas went on to play basketball with two community colleges before being picked up on an athletic scholarship by Mercyhurst University. Following his college basketball career Douglas returned to Columbus to focus on boxing. That’s the sport Buster Douglas is known worldwide for — capped by his stunning 10th round knockout upset of then previously undefeated heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, in 1990.

Big Walnut Grill owner Jon Self knows Buster Douglas, Buster’s manager John Johnson and Buster’s trainer JD McCauley; and Self has arranged for a special event at the Big Walnut Grill with special guests Douglas, Johnson and McCauley.

Starting at 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, the entire original HBO broadcast of the historic Buster Douglas vs. Mike Tyson Heavyweight Championship Fight will be shown, commemorating the February 11 anniversary of the Upset of the Century fight from the moment Douglas and Tyson entered the ring to the knockout.

Self said customers who order an entre that night would receive a signed picture of Buster Douglas, and there will be a special $25 per person VIP Party preceding the HBO video.

“Join us for the special VIP Party starting at 6:30 p.m.,” Self said. “The first 50 people to sign up for the VIP Party will receive a one-on-one signed photo with Buster Douglas, and Buster will also sign one other item of your choice. Then you can hang out and watch the fight with Buster, John and JD.”

Self said the event would include a Question and Answer session with Buster Douglas, John Johnson and JD McCauley.

The Big Walnut Grill’s Smoke House Buffet will include smoked brisket, southern pulled pork and smoked wings with a choice of sauces and knockout vegetables and potatoes.

The Big Walnut Grill is located at 175 Ohio 3 in Sunbury.
