Big Walnut’s Golden Eagle girls indoor track team to off to a solid start with season-opening meets on Saturday, January 18, and Saturday, February 1, at The Ohio State University.
Members of the Golden Eagles’ jump squad, led by Olivia Small who placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 9.25 inches, competed on January 18 at OSU. Avery Kerns and Small scored thirds, Kerns in the high jump a 5-0 and Small in the long jump at 16-5.
Anna Mackey and Kerns placed for Big Walnut last Saturday at Ohio State with Mackey taking second in triple jump at 33-1.75 and Kerns seventh in the high jump at 4-10 with the 4x400 relay team of Sara Althauser, Olivia Daggett, Avery Kerns and Catie Craig-Bowden taking sixth in 4 minutes, 42.29 seconds.
So far, the indoor season has been solid,” Big Walnut head coach Joe Evener said. “We started slow with just sending the jumpers to Ohio State on the 18th, but we got great results. After having last weekend’s (Saturday, January 25) meet cancelled at Ohio Wesleyan due to the bitter cold and snow, we finally got a chance to have most of the team compete this past weekend, and the results were very good. We do have work to do on the track, but the girls are working hard and they are excited about getting started.”
Unofficial Current State Ranking With four weeks remaining in the season, The unofficial State Rankings list six Golden Eagle athletes among the leaders. Small is ranked first in the triple jump and second in the long jump, Kerns fifth in the high jump, Mackey fourth in the triple jump; Jamie Annis seventh in the 60 hurdles, and the quartet of Althauser, Daggett, Kerns and Craig-Bowden 12th in the 4x400 relay.
At the end of the regular indoor season, the top 16 move on to Akron on March 8 for the State Indoor Meet.
