Luke Moore’s Big Walnut matmen enjoyed a strong performance at the Gahanna Invitational held Tuesday, February 18 at Gahanna Lincoln High School.
The Golden Eagles, who finished third in the 8-team field at the end of the day, scored decisions over Licking Valley (40-36), Watkins Memorial (46-27) and Granville (36-34). Setbacks came at the hands of Hilliard Bradley (67-3) and the host Lions (45-25).
Senior Alec Eisnnicher, wrestling at 182 pounds, scored five victories for the Golden Eagles. He scored a 0:42-second fall in the Licking Valley match; a 5-minute, 3-second fall versus Watkins; a 10-8 decision against the Jaguars; a 17-2 technical fall versus the Lions; and a pin in 0:31 against the Blue Aces.
Joining Eisnnicher as multiple winners for Big Walnut were senior RJ Martin, senior Austin Carr and sophomore Evan Watkins.
Martin scored a 13-5 major decision at 145 pounds against Licking Valley, a pin in 4:42 at 138 pounds versus Watkins, and an 8-4 decision at 138 against the Lions. Carr, competing at 160 pounds, posted victories 9-8 decision against Licking Valley, a pin in 3:35 versus the Warriors and a 12-2 major decision versus Gahanna. Watkins recorded two decisions at 195 pounds with a pin in 2:48 against Watkins and a 5-3 decision in the Gahanna match .
Scoring single wins for the Golden Eagles were sophomore Jacob Hadden, freshman Matt Russell, freshman Matt Halbakken, sophomore Wes Landrum and sophomore Drew Cochran.
126: Hadden scored a 9-8 decision at 126 pounds against Licking Valley. Russell and Halbakken posted two victories in the Watkins match, Russell with a 11-1 major decision at 113 and Halbakken with a pin in 3:36 at 126. Landrum recorded a 15-3 major decision at 120 pounds against Gahanna and Cochran a pin in 1:36 at 132 pounds versus Granville.
