UNIOPOLIS — The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office was investigating what it is calling a “suspicious death” at a residence in Uniopolis.

At 4:30 p.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office was notified of the death, which took place in a residence at the intersection of South Main and East Ohio streets in Uniopolis. Officers then arrived at the scene at 4:37 p.m.

“We have what we believe to be a male deceased,” Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said.

Several deputies remained on the scene for several hours. In addition, two crime scene unit vehicles from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were dispatched to the residence to aid in the investigation. As of 9:20 p.m. Monday, both crime scene units, as well as several deputies, remained at the residence, with investigators visible from a second-story entryway on the east side of the structure.

With the gathering of evidence in its early stages, Solomon would not go so far as to call the death a homicide.

“We’re just looking into it and handling it that way as a suspicious death,” he said. “I wouldn’t even call it a homicide, just a suspicious death, until we learn more.”

The identity of the dead man was not released, nor the specific address of the residence, pending notification of the individual’s family, which, according to Solomon, can take time to accomplish.

“Not all of the family has been notified,” he said. “That’s our concern about putting out more information. We’re still in the early stages, and we want to give it our best shot of getting in touch with all of the family.”
