UNIOPOLIS — A suspicious death in the village reported Monday is now labeled a homicide by the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Al Solomon also released the identity of the victim, Charles E. Hicks, 53, of Uniopolis.
Preliminary autopsy results indicate that the cause of death was not natural and were caused by another, Solomon said in a statement Tuesday. Solomon declined to release any other information related to the cause of death because the case remains under investigation.
On Monday, neighbors said they were surprised to hear about Hicks’ death.
“He was a good guy,” said Kyle Essex, who lived with his family below Hicks’ apartment. “We’ve lived here for about a year, and he always came down and talked to us. He was always good with the kids.”
Deputies and detectives continued to investigate any and all leads developed with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Solomon said.
Deputies found Hicks in his apartment on South Main Street after a caller requested police to check on him. He had not been seen recently by friends or co-workers. The body of the man has been taken to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office in Toledo for an autopsy.
Solomon was encouraging the public to contact his office.
“Again, anyone with information on this case is urged to contact the detectives,” Solomon said. “This office is working hard to solve this case and would welcome any helpful information.”
