Big Walnut’s boys came up empty in three of their last four tennis matches.
The Golden Eagles ended a 3-match losing streak with a 4-1 non-conference decision over visiting Watkins Memorial on Friday, May 2, in Sunbury. In their prior three matches they dropped a close 3-2 non-conference road decision to St. Francis DeSales on Thursday, May 1; a 4-1 Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division decision to rival Delaware Hayes on Senior Night on Friday, May 2, at home; and a 5-0 non-conference match to Westerville South at home.
In the Watkins Memorial victory senior Logan Adams (6-2, 6-1) and freshman Stephen Pushkin (6-4, 6-2) scored singles victories while the tandems of freshmen Jared Deel and Nick Schulz (6-2, 6-1) and senior Scott Bailey and junior Isaiah Kolb (6-4, 6-2) led a doubles sweep.
The match with the Stallions saw four of the five matches tightly contest with and Kolb scoring a 6-4, 6-3 decision at third singles and senior Grant Burks and Bailey teaming up for a 6-4, 6-2 victory at second doubles. The first doubles match saw BW’s Deel/Schulz locked in a tight three-set battle before falling 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (8).
In another competitive match, the Golden Eagles managed to win only one court with Adams notching a 7-5, 6-3 verdict at first singles.
Big Walnut came up short against the Wildcats in a shutout loss. Deel and Schulz battled in their first doubles match, but came up on the short in the end in a 6-3, 6-2 outcome.
