The Sunbury United Methodist Church (SUMC) will host its 27th annual Memorial Day Yard Sale from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, May 26. at 100 West Cherry Street in Sunbury. This annual event, which is held in conjunction with the Memorial Day Flea Market on the Sunbury square, attracts people from all over Central Ohio. Parking is free, and there will be great deals on furniture, tools, toys, household goods, antiques and more, all donated by church members.
In addition to the items sold in the yard sale, a $4 homemade breakfast will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the dining room, followed by a $4 homemade lunch, which starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. or until the food runs out.
A tradition started in 1987, the Memorial Day Yard Sale is a church-wide effort and has become the top fund-raising activity of the church. Last year, the yard sale and its related activities — the sale of breakfast, lunch and homemade ice cream — raised about $10,000 which was used to support the church’s missions and ministries.
The first yard sale was held in the church parking lot and on the sidewalks with fewer than 10 tables, and the church raised about $5,000. Now the event is both inside the church’s multi-purpose room and outside on the church grounds with 60-plus tables. In addition members of the church serve breakfast and lunch in the church dining room and sell homemade ice cream on the square.
This year the church is selling 20-foot wide ‘flea spots’ on the church property for $30. Interested vendors can contact the church office to make a reservation.
